I hope Krist and Dave don't let her get away with this.

I should certainly hope not. As do legions of other Nirvana fans.

I dont think they really have much of a say.
Dosent the skank own the rights to all of Nirvana's material? And even if she does, its not that big a deal. Afterall, M. Jackson owned The Beatles catalouge for a few yrs.

Sad. Love must be really hard up for money, although most of her problems are of her own creation.

And we got to hear "I Saw Him Standing There" by Tiffany or Debbie Gibson, or whoever it was (and even worse trash) because of that sale. :evilangry

I don't know how she won the rights to the songs over Krist and Dave. But she is a true bitch who will rot in the depths of hell for this.

Be prepared to hear Nirvana songs on TV commercials and bad TV shows everyone.

Maybe "Smells Like Teen Spirit" will be the theme song for an upcoming Saved by the Bell revival.

Last I heard Krist and Dave are a partnership with Love. That its a 3 way partnership and I can't see them going along with her.

How about "lithium" being used for a Pepsi commercial?
Even if, would it somehow lessen the quality of the music?
Would fans really be all like "Nirvana was my favorite band, ever. Now that Kotex is using Smells Like Teen Spirit they suck!"?

Eh, its just Nirvana's songs. No big deal.

You know, considering that Courtney Love isn't exactly the ideal custodian of Nirvana's legacy anyway, maybe this isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Unless she sells them to Michael Jackson.

I wouldn't worry. MJ is quite broke now. His days of buying other artists' copyrights are over.

Be interesting to see if Paul McCartney will step in and buy the rights. He's bought a lot of muscians works the last few years.

Yeah, but how would he feel, knowing where the money's going?

It happened to the Beatles, I'm not going to lose sleep over it.

Certainly. He owns the rights to many popular standards. This helps him stay incredibly rich. I think he owns the rights to "The Christmas Song" (the "chestnuts roasting on an open fire" song).

I would have bought Heather a bionic leg by now.

Last I knew, McCartney also owned the rights to Buddy Holly's songs. At one point, he was also partial owner of most or all of the old Desilu properties - including "I Love Lucy" and the original Star Trek episodes, but I don't know if that's still the case.

I can deal with Sir Paul owning them. I really would love to hear a Paul McCartney version of " No Apologies " anyhow. Plus he'd respect the Band and its legacy so...why not ?

This was actually much discussed during the big legal battle a couple of years back. She contended that she had the right to control all of the records, etc. because Kurt wrote the lion's share of the songs. Krist and Dave contended that because he wrote the lion's share of the songs, she had the lion's share of control over the publishing but that they were a band and they held a third each of interest over recordings, use of the band's name, etc.

The article doesn't say so explicitly, but this definitely seems to be song publishing, which she does control most of. "Smells Like Teen Spirit", for example, does actually give credit to Krist and Dave and they should retain their co-ownership after a sale like this.

Which leads to the question no one has asked: Are Krist and Dave going to try for it? Do they have the resources?

Surely Dave does. Aren't Foo Fighters among the top-selling hard rock bands in the world these days?

Foo Fighters
(1995)
#23 U.S., #3 U.K.

The Colour and the Shape
(1997)
#10 U.S., #3 U.K.

There Is Nothing Left to Lose
(1999)
#10 U.S., #10 U.K.

One by One
(2002)
#3 U.S., #1 U.K.

In Your Honor
(2005)
#2 U.S., #2 U.K.

Sure seems like it, at least from the big two music markets. And note that all these records have been certified 'Platinuum.'
