I know that the special edition has more features, but from what I've heard, the original is gratuitously more challenging . I'm planning on buying one of these. Which one should I get?

The SE has a 6th difficulty level and had the existing modes shifted around some (easy became normal. normal became hard etc..) The challenge is still there, just pick hard mode

Yeah, that's pretty much true. The Special Edition is pretty sweet though, as there are a crapload of extras.

definitely get the special edition. you can amp the difficulty up. and the extras make it a much better deal than the original game.

Plus, the special edition is a Greatest Hits game, so it sells for 20 bucks, whereas I saw Best Buy still had the regular DMC3 for 30.

Is this game as tough as the 1st one? Or is it somewhere between 1 and 2?

Special edition.

Get extra difficulty level.
Get to play the game as dantes brother after beating the game.
Brand new its 19.99
New boss.
Turbo speed mode.
Survival mode (9999 levels of fighting)
Movie mode. (watch any movie when you want.
New continue system.

All that on top of the normal original version of DMC3. This is a no brainer to be sure.

I wasnt going to buy it because of how bad DMC2 sucked but when I read about the SE and it has greatest hits pricing I figured why not try it out. Still not as good as the first to me but fun.

That bonus difficulty is in truth the Hard mode of the original version. They simply renamed it to "Very Hard".

I know it took me longer to beat Ninja Gaiden. But I think DMC 3 has a comparable level of toughness.

Nopers, its harder. That supposed statement was addressed by Capcom in a interview in PSM when the game came out. Its a new difficulty. That interview was the decision maker in me trying the game and getting the SE.

Anyways it's almost decided, I'm close to getting Special Edition.

I don't have the Special Edition myself. But I got to play a friend's copy for a little while. From what I played, on the "Very Hard" setting, it seems better, more challenging, but at the same time, you don't feel like you're being cheated.
