There is little remorse for the recently deceased A.J. (who bit the dust in #2). Henry, A.J.'s partner, is now assigned to work with Stretch; a cowboy hat wearing Buddhist. Their first duty is to clean out the Regency Manor, a delapidated mental hospital, supposedly overrun with rats.

Henry heads for the second floor, where he hears a woman shouting from behind a closed door. When he attempts to help, an orderly cuts him off and tells him to mind his own business. Henry waits for him to leave, then investigates the screams. What he finds is a poor woman being eaten alive by maggots (or so I think).

In their laboratoy, Dr. Sar and Professor Neal continue their cockroach study. Neal, a homely overweight lady, puts emphasis on the sexual nature of the roaches, and ends the scene putting the moves on Sar.

Back at the Regency, Henry and Stretch are offered money to keep their mouths shut about the incident with the poor lady. Henry refuses, but Stretch accepts. Outside, Stretch tells Henry that there are other ways to handle the situation beside losing their temper. And as Henry stalks off, Stretch is seen slipping a rat inside the glove compartment of a car...

Elsewhere, Laura, Henry's girlfriend, is moving up the Ocran work ladder via a lesbian relationship.

That night, Henry helps a woman and her son with their bug problem. Things have gotten a big out of hand when roaches spill from their cereal boxes, and Henry is just the right man for the job. He makes a deal for his services, showing a friendly, caring side of his character, and commences laying down "cochroach kryptonite" to kill the pests. As he leaves, the mother and son can hear the cochroaches feasting inside the walls...

At dinner that night, Henry disgusts his mother with stories about his job. He excuses himself, to take food to his crippled grandfather who hasn't walked or talked since 1984; a victim of bug chemicals. However, when Henry enters his room, the old man is on his feet and talking. A bug crawls on his window sill, and as Henry watches, the old man beams and crowns it "beautiful".

It's then that the family learns that the Bug-Bee-Gone has been vandalized. Henry's father, Nils, heads down to speak with the police. It appears that A.J.'s locker has been broken into, and the Draxx chemical stolen. The police eye Henry, with his previous convictions, but Nils tells him that he's been home all night. Either way, the police are ready to start their investigation.

Meanwhile, Stretch meditates as the head of the Regency Manor drives on an open stretch of highway. The man speaks into a cell-phone, relating that he has blown off the woman's attack and the earlier trouble at the Manor. His conversation, however, is interrupted by a scratching noise in the glove compartment; which, when opened, reveals a very hungry rat.

Stretch smiles as the man's car crashes off the road...

Another great issue!

The storylines are getting pretty deep. The deal with Dr. Sar, Laura's lesbian relationship, the break-in, and Henry's grandfather are all getting pretty thick.

Loved the scene with the woman screaming she was being eaten alive, and the lesbian bit wasn't too bad, either... lol.

Excellent read!

Thoughts?

In my opinion, Exterminators is by far the best of the recent Vertigo lauunches, all of which I actually enjoyed so far. I'm betting that the "beautiful" big, which appear to be the same as AJ's tatoo and the bug that scurried away from Henry last issue (probably hitched a ride with Henry to the family dinner) has some kind of mystical rejuvenating power, which is why AJ was scrambling for his box when he ODed and grandpa is suddenly no longer a vegetable. Loved Stretch's karmic retribution as well.

Agreed. Loving the story and the art.

This has "big story" written all over it.

Incredibly original-- beautifully illustrated kick in the nuts. That's how I'd describe this incredible book! :)
