View Full Version : Do you wish the Dreamcast had made it?

The Dreamcast is obviously one of the systems that had great potential, and it was apart of this current generation of systems even though it didn't last. But now that this generation is coming to an end do you feel that the Dreamcast would've have been a great system these past years? It introduced great games like Soul Caliber and now it's nothing. I personally would've liked to see how it would've played out and how Sega was gonna impliment some of the things that they promised. I really wish that when the Dreamcast came out I was at the age where I cared more about games.

Soul Edge is the fighting game that started the series that came to be called "Soul Calibur". It's also the name of the evil sword the games revolve around.
As for the DC, I thought it was ahead of its time. It was the first system to go OL, allowing you to surf the web and even DL content and game saves to VMU, not to mention SegaNet and games like PSO. I think it died before we saw the true potential of it realized.

There's such a huge gap between the Soul Edge and Soul Calibur that it's worth separating them.
And yes, the DC goes right along with the GC and XB in the "criminally underused" section

Man, Powerstone had to be the funnest fighting game I ever played. Sure, it didn't have as many moves as other games but it was pure button mashing fun.

The Dreamcast was a great system that had some really nice games. Unfortunately, after the failure of the Saturn and the subsequent abandoning of Sega by a number of key publishers, the Dreamcast didn't really have much of a chance against the Playstation 2.
Still, I reserved my Dreamcast and picked it the day it was released. Loved the system and never regretted buying it. I still have it. Didn't get a PS2 until years later.

I loved the DC when it came and I still have it today. It's still one of the best systems for fighting games, especially if you import.
Also for you ppl that do import:

Soul Blade/Edge is pure class.
There's a difference between them, but it set the foundations for the rest.

The first game in the series, Soul Calibur is technically the sequel to Edge.

Yeah. Been on GameFAQs for a long time. Although the only board I ever posted on for any length of time were the old Capcom vs. SNK boards. I don't really post too much there now, I still haven't recovered from the rampant idiocy of the GTA: San Andreas boards

I think the XBOX was announced when the Dreamcast was still being manufactured. I'm sure it would've been created even if the Dreamcast kept on going.

Third parties always seemed to abandon Sega. Personally I always thought the Master System was better than the NES. I had both of them. Except for the Genesis, Third Parties always seemed to ignore Sega.

I just mean that X-box seemed to pick-up where Sega left off, encouraging OL play and downloadable goodies etc, only they pulled in more 3rd party developers, which DC seemed to have a problem doing.

Soul calibur was dreamcast, soul calibur 2 was xbox-PS2-Gamecube, soul calibur 3 is PS2 and soul blade is PS1.

And for the record I dont care if the dreamcast made it or not. Systems dont mean squat unless the games are good. I dont care who makes the system or what its called as long as my games are good.
From a technological standpoint NES wasnt better than dreamcast but which had a better library of good games? Hell the NES has a better library of games with xbox/xbox360/gamecube all put together.
Like buying a 25,000 tv set. If there arent any good shows to watch on it what in the hell good is it for?

Dude, the Dreamcast had quite a few insanely good games, but the superior advertising and 3rd party support for its competitors kept it from getting any more; Shenmue I & II were the most beautiful things I've ever played, Jet Grind/Set Radio paved the way for every cell shading game afterwards in addition to being ludicrously awesome to play, Zero Gunner is still my favorite Gradius style shooter for all that it was too short and too easy, Power Stone I & II were far superior to the Super Smash Brothers series, Skies of Arcadia remains one of the best RPGs ever made (though the GC upgrade was better, to be fair), Seaman was a nearly psychedelic experience, etc... And of course, Soul Calibur.
And X-Box as a spiritual sequal to it kinda fits in to the fact that the DC was based off of Windows NT or something, IIRC.

They're kinda one and the same.
Anyway, I feel that if DreamCast had delayed it'self, and implemented DVD technology instead of playing GD-Rs, it would've stood up in this generation. I mean, come on, right out of the box online support was pretty cool

SSB had cooler characters, yeah, but when a game has a guy named Wang Tang and everyone still enjoys being him, you know you've got a winner. TO THE MAX!

To be honest, I'm a Nintendo person.
However, my brother liked the Dreamcast. The de facto game in that system, to me, is Sonic Adventure.
Powerstone, Soul Edge, and Phantasy Star Online also count as key games.

It was given to me by someone who no longer wanted it after getting a PS2. I tried to donate to some Hurricane Katrina survivors but they had X-Box so didn't want or need it, so I gave it to a friend who was getting into playing old school games. She played it for a night or two, then went back to the NES. I also make more than enough money to buy another 5 if I ever really wanted one, but I doubt that will ever happen. I barely have time to play the games I have on much better systems. Thanks for your input though.

Yeah, it does. Or less hurtful, at least. It's similar to the mechanism behind sarcasm; Alot of it is in the delivery.
Edit: Maybe what I'm thinking of is familiarity. Like a good friend vs a stranger.

I would have loved for Dreamcast to survive. But Sega are a bunch of idiots.
Do you guys know why Sega is in a terrible shape right now, and why Dreamcast got burned. One reason: Shenmue. Shen freaken mue. Okay, that and PS2/XBox/Gc.
Shenmue was the most expensive game ever made, and nobody bought it. Sounds like Tron doesn't? Well, the difference is that Sega hasn't recovered like Disney has.
I kinda liked Shenmue too, but it was not worth it's money. At all.

A lot of the times, when people use a smiley or a 'j/k' tacked on to a rude or insulting comment, it's less in the interest of actually being jokey or sarcastic, and more of a premptive attempt at deflecting blame for being rude or insulting.

Shenmue wasn't worth much. It was an okay game, but could be very dull and didn't at all live up to the hype. I definitely think they made a mistake assuming it would be in all these chapters instead of trying to give some closure with the first game.

Wouldn't that have made the DC more successful? Unless pirated GD-Rs didn't need the DC hardware? The increase in console sales was probably negligible, compared to the amount of money they lost in selling games. Not to mention that it probably scared off some of the 3rd party support, since *all* the money they made was in game sales.

Now and again I do wish that the Dreamcast had succeeded and become a major powerhouse. It certainly deserved to, the reasons being:
Online play right out of the box
The best ports of arcade gems
Innovative controller and memory unit design/interaction
Excellent cult classic games.
I still keep my Dreamcast right next to me. I still play with it. The absolute best game I ever got for it was Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 (found it for $10 at a Wal-Mart four years ago. Best purchase I've ever made) I sincerely believed that if the developers saw what potential the system had, that they would flock to it in droves. Sadly, Sony had a better marketing paradigm than Sega; so my interests moved to Nintendo.
I still support Sega, but I still hold out hope for another console; even though I pretty much know that it will never happen. Oh well, what does one live for if not hope?
