View Full Version : Ms. Marvel #1 Screw up

Did anyone else notice in Ms. Marvel #1 that the character that she is having lunch with is drawn like Jessica Drew, even has green eyes. But she talks and acts like Jessica Jones. Looks like to me someone screwed up. There is one seen when Jessica tells Carol about her rampage with the atkins diet. I know Jessica Drew and Carol are friendly but they are not buds like Jessica Jones, so Drew would not have known that. Plus Jessica Drew does not smoke where Jones does.
I like Ms. Marvel but this book along with Ms. Marvel Giant Size were just ok books. This series unfortunatly is not going to last. :(

I noticed that also...I believe they mentioned her being pregnant. This is a big problem.

Actually, Carol and Jessica Drew ARE 'buds'--they developed a very close friendship after Jessica spent several weeks with Carol helping her to recover from what Rogue did to her. We haven't seen a lot of them hanging out together on-panel since then, but the two women have been established to have a strong friendship.
Plus Jessica Drew does not smoke where Jones does.
True...or at least, we haven't seen Drew smoke before.

To be honest, Brian Reed is currently co-writing the Spider-Woman:Origin book, so I doubt he mixed up his Jessicas. I am sure he wrote the scene with Jessica Drew in mind.
I don't know if Jones is Carol's best friend, but I have seen people mention that Jessica Drew shouldn't be in this scene cuz she is not Carol's best bud;well, nothing in this issue indicated that the woman sitting in front of Carol was her best buddy...all Carol narrated was:
"My friend Jessica Drew is in the superhero game herself...I can tell her anything and be sure to get her full suport"
And like Dermie said, the start of a friendship was established in Avengers Annual # 10.
btw...the woman didn't exactly sound like Jones either...Dermie could help me here...is Jones that girly/giggly anyway, even with her female friends?
Oh, and the smoking part I chalk it up to stress...Jessica is currently going through a highly stressful double agent/triple agent life-or-death dilemma with Hydra and Shield...maybe she started smoking occasionally to relieve stress, and now she is a tad hooked, as you can see by her smoking right after a meal...
In any case, her immunity to most toxins and poisons probably keeps her blood stream clean...(though her lungs is another matter)

We haven't really seen them together since then (although there have been a few references to their friendship--including in ALIAS), but that is largely due to Jessica Drew being in Marvel limbo for years, as well as Carol's years in space. But Annual #10 said very clearly that the two of them had formed a strong friendship, so I think we were meant to assume that the friendship between them would continue, rather than simply disappear.
btw...the woman didn't exactly sound like Jones either...Dermie could help me here...is Jones that girly/giggly anyway, even with her female friends?
To be honest, Jessica's dialogue here could work for either Jones or Drew. I wouldn't say she was giggly here at all (actually, Carol seemed to be laughing more than Jess was in the conversation).
Jessica Jones and Carol have had lunch conversations like this before, so it would have been perfectly natural for this conversation to have been between them (in fact, when I first saw the preview art without dialogue, I assumed it WAS Jones). Of course, Drew has more superhero experience than Jones does--and is currently still a superhero--so she might be a more logical choice to use in this scene, given the conversation.
As for the smoking, I think you'd be more likely to see Drew smoking than Jones these days--I think Jessica gave up cigarettes once she learned she was pregnant.

Jones already had the baby... So she could be smoking again.

Only if she wants to kill her child. Second hand smoke is dangerous for anyone, but especially so for an infant, since they are smaller and their lungs are still developing. My guess would be that Jessica has given them up completely, for the good of her kid (not to mention her own health--her smoking and drinking was the result of her depression about her traumatic experiences...Jessica has worked through a lot of those issues now, so she won't engage in a lot of the same self-destructive behaviour that she used to).

Only if she wants to kill her child. Second hand smoke is dangerous for anyone, but especially so for an infant, since they are smaller and their lungs are still developing.Yeah, but for second-hand smoke to be harmful to a child, the child needs to be present. "Smoking again" doesn't mean lighting up next to the baby's crib. I haven't read the issue yet, but if it IS Jones and she was smoking while out at lunch, without her baby present, then it's not going to harm her child.

03-03-2006, 08:26 AM
sorry bud but the kid doesnt have to be present to be hurt by a smoking parent..as an ex smoker and father smoke clings to clothing and furniture, carpets ect and contributes to an increased risk of ear infection and asthma. also if she is going to breast feed then she cant smoke either...you want to keep your kid healthy then you cant smoke in your car (with or without them) or smoke a pack without them and then hold them against the same clothes you smoked in all day without hurting them. ever smell your clothes after smoking all day? :) now imagine your 3 months old with a brand new immune system :)

True enough--but that doesn't change my point about Jessica giving up a lot of her self-destructive behaviours. If she gave up smoking for the pregnancy, then it is just as likely that she would choose to stay off the cigarettes permanently.

I actually think it was supposed to be Jessica Jones instead of Jessica Drew. At least according to Marvel's solicitation for Ms. Marvel #1.
I got the solicit off of marvel.com:
The Story: Straight out of the pages of NEW AVENGERS and HOUSE OF M! Call your friends, wake the neighbors, shout it from the rooftops! For the first time in over two decades, Ms. Marvel stars in her own ongoing series! Come along for one heck of a wild ride as Brian Reed (co-writer of the thrilling SPIDER-WOMAN: ORIGIN) joins forces with penciler extraordinaire Rob de la Torre for an action-packed adventure that includes special guest stars Captain America and Jessica Jones. All this and an alien invasion that could mean the end of life on Earth, is tucked inside a cover by Eisner Award-nominated Frank Cho!
32 PGS./T+ SUGGESTED FOR TEENS AND UP ...$2.99
It's either a mistake in the comic or in the solicit.

yes and yes. of course, it's painfully obvious that Marvel isn't doing all it could to promote this series. they go with Frank Cho on covers but the insides are below marvel team-up standards. oh well, at least Carol's personality is still there. i like how she's being portrayed as a glory hound. what's always attracted me to the characters is that she's all about being Tha' Man. she's skilled and wants people to recognize that (carryover from her chauvinistic father). and i do want to know more about this publicist and the rest of her clients. all in all, i'd give it 4 out of 5 stars.

You guys are ridiculous...that was obviously J. Jones. Why try to justify it? They f'ed up it happens. Dont be apologists....Damn.

A meaningless observation here... but flipping through Avengers forever during the big fight scene at the end it does show Warbird duking it out with Spider Woman 1. Actually, the way it's drawn it almost looks like Jessica is copping a feel there... maybe it's another indicator of their friendship.

People keep saying the character acted like Jessica Jones, and I would agree if Jessica Jones' entire personality were encapsulated in one thing: her smoking.
But that is just not accurate, so as I see it, this is called characterization...
Clearly, Drew has taken up smoking off-panel, and I would too if I were going through what she is currently.

There's the swearing, the slight cynicism, the lunch scenario, the mocking Carol following trends...

Jessica's smoking is the first I've seen of Marvel releasing the ridiculous politically correct "no smoking" policy in comic books.

I'm sorry, but I really can't see that happening. If it were Captain America smoking a cigarette, I would believe it was done for 'shock value'...but here I would just say it is a writer with a different view of the character.

No, I don't and I never have. I hate the smell of them, and I've had health problems in the past related to second hand smoke.

What policy? Ben Grimm and Nick Fury haven't stopped smoking, have they? Though I'd expect people whose profession is running, jumping and fighting not to smoke.

Joe Quesada put in a policy to show absolutely no smoking in the comics when he became Editor-in-Chief. Wolverine, Nick Fury, Emma Frost, Ben Grimm suddenly quit smoking in comics.
It was a stupid idea.

would/could the co-writere really screw up that bad? i'm betting it's Drew, rather than Jones.
Also, i remember reading back in Wizard in the mid-90s that superheroes weren't allowed to be shown smoking anymore, cuz Wolverine's cover images of him smoking were bad for kids or something...guess this went out of effect, or may be it's just a ban on smoking on the cover.

Or maybe it's just Wolverine who can't be shown smoking. I can't recall the last time I saw him smoke. He is the idol of millions afterall.
Though I do think if Jessica Drew can smoke, Logan should be able to as well. Artisically it does seem to be a part of his character, regardless of whether it's right or wrong from the standpoint of him being a "role model" (a role model that often is seen choping people into little itty bitty pieces with large sharp metal claws).
