Hi guys/gals,
I was noticing a couple of doom patrol and animal man trades at my book shop and I had a few questions regarding Grant Morrisons run on these titles as these series get so much acclaim. I'm unfamiliar with these titles except for the first and only Animal man book i bought many years ago as a kid where grant morrison makes an apperance. A writer making an appearance in his book? that blew my little mind away. but anyway I was wondering
1)why are his runs on these two titles so respected?
2)what trades are there of his runs on these two titles- do they collect his entire run?
3. whats the art like?
4.which is more essential?
I realise this might come down to preference in terms of genres but I'm strapped for cash what with all the INFINITE comics around now and wanted to get the title that is most impressive to read first.

1)why are his runs on these two titles so respected? They blew a lot of other peoples' minds away, too.2)what trades are there of his runs on these two titles- do they collect his entire run? There are three trades for each, at the moment. The ANIMAL MAN run is completely collected, the DOOM PATROL run is about halfway there.3. whats the art like?Chas Truog and Richard Case do fine jobs, but their work probably isn't to everyone's taste.4.which is more essential?Hard to say. ANIMAL MAN is more accessible (and complete, which counts for a lot), but DOOM PATROL is more experimental.
Really, you can't go wrong with either.

1. Grant's work on those titles were very surreal and twilght zone -esque. Taking B - list characters and making them interesting.
3. The art - eh, the Animal Man art took awhile to grow on me. Case's art worked very well for DP.
4. For me, DP is the overall choice - but you need the entire run to get the full impact.
Animal Man is more reader friendly; in contrast, Doom Patrol becomes more experimental with the introduction of Crazy Jane (each personality has a different power with a total of 64 personalities including Crazy Jane), Rebus, & Dorothy along with Flex Metallo, Danny the Street, the Brotherhood of Dada (a revamp of the Brotherhood of Evil based on Dadaism)...
However, I recommend both books. Morrison spent 4 years on Doom Patrol to his 2 years on Animal Man. You need to read all of Grant Morrison's Doom Patrol as a whole to really understand where he's coming from with the characters.

On DP, Morrison returned the book to it's roots. They're a team of freaks and weirdos who investigate the bizarre things that the regular heroes don't. In true Morrison fashion, he gives this idea his own unique twist. The book is downright weird, but also very, very good.

Both books were very good. I loved Animal Man's "The Coyote Gospel" and Doom Patrol's "Crawling from the Wreckage." Start there (the first books of each series) and try them for taste.
(Btw, the writer Grant meets his fate in War of the Gods crossover)

I'd heard this from someone else, but is it just me, or does that make no sense at all and completely violate the kind of story that Morrison was trying to do in the end?

Probably, but it is fun little retcon. It happened in Suicide Squad.

The three animal man trades are:
Animal Man
Origin of the Species
Deus Ex Machina
The collect all of Morrison's run. I don't know the DP ones offhand, but they aren't all collected yet - though I'm sure they will be eventually.
3. whats the art like?
The Animal Man art ranges from poor to passable. The Doom Patrol art ranges from passable to good. Neither run is exactly blessed.
4.which is more essential?
Animal Man by far for me - though both are good.
Also if you're into all this Crisis stuff the Animal Man run contains the true sequel to Crisis on Infinite Earths
