View Full Version : Wells/Young New Warriors: any good?

I never grew up on New Warriors, though they debuted around the time I just got into comics (early 90's). I was much more vested in the X-Men and Spider-Man family of titles.
Well, I love Scottie Young's pencils, and Zeb Wells has a ton of buzz around him, so I was going to pick this up when it came out in single issues. Unfortunately, I didn't have enough money to add it to the pull. Now that its in TPB, I am thinking of picking it up.
So, is it worth it? Is it a good mini? Is it fun, accessible, action packed? Is it just an overall good read? Thanks in advance.

I liked the first issue the best, and from there on it progressively go worse and worse for me.

It's a fun miniseries. The equivalent of a pop corn movie but it's a well done one.
I did love Microbe though, he's a great addition.
I think it was a lot of fun and is definately worth picking up.

In other words: It's fun but you aren't going to be hating yourself and selling your soul to Satan if you don't get it.

Lots of fun; Zeb Wells is one of Marvel's most underrated writers at the moment.

I kinda assumed it would be printed in digest form, in which I would have read it for sure. Unfortunately, it wasn't, so I'll be giving it a miss..

Why, oh why, did you just start World War III?

Issues #1-4 were very good. The last two issues lost a little bit of steam but it was still a good read. :)

Because there were a couple of people who absolutely hated the book, and couldn't accept the fact that some people liked it.

Actually, there were many, many more people that hated the book than liked it, as evidenced by the numbers steady decline with each issue.

What was so bad about it? From what I have heard, it was well praised.

As opposed to, gosh, I dunno, every series going?
It would only be "many, many more people" who hated it if the final sales were (many, many) fewer than half of the initial sales.
But let's not get into this again, please...

I really enjoyed the mini series and would definitely recommend it to fans of the characters since its lighthearted funand I loved Skottie's style & design. I only wished that Night Thrasher was more leader'like and Nova's no sleeve design kind of blew.
Civil War messes up the team pretty bad but then again who knows, they could appear again in some form later.

The final issue was less than half the 1st issue in sales, around 9000, IIRC. When issue 1 only sells 20000, there's a problem. The New Warriors fans of the 90s weren't able to look at these covers and see the team that they had loved so much. I bought the 1st 3 issues, just because i wanted to support the New Warriors in the hopes of a "real" relaunch, even though I hated everything about it. Then when I saw the numbers on it, I too dropped it, because I realized it was doomed.
And I really, REALLY hope Microbe dies in Civil War.

I read the New Warriors in the nineties, got the first issue and everything.
I loved the new book, I wish theyd do more with this creative team. Broad generalizations make the baby jeebus cry.
