OK, so if you read the comm board you already know this, but I just had a very good interview for an editorial position at Tips & Tricks Magazine. And I want this job. Bad. The editor in chief said he would call me next week (yesterday being Friday and all) to ask if I had any suggestions to improve the magazine. Now, the magazine is pretty set in its format, and any major overhaul stuff would drastically change the page count, so doing stuff that the magazine doesn't do completly, like reviews, seems out. I've come up with a couple of column ideas, at least one of which is a real killer, but I figured I'd ask the Internet anyways.

Anyone got any ideas I can steal from you? If I get the job, I'll be in a position to give you something really cool. Keep in mind, Larry Flynt publishes Tips & Tricks.

A magazine that provides tips and tricks for games you can get on the internet a month before the magazine comes out......
But given the larry flynt comment, and the fact that the magazine is now essentialy useless, i recomend naked broads every other page.

The strength of Tips & Tricks is that it's a unique entity in a sea of samey video game mags, not only for its focus on strat guides and cheats, but for its unique columns that focus on areas of gaming the other mags rarely focus on.

I don't see much to suggest in terms of improving the mag as my first instinct is to do something about the preview section, a section that I knows serves a specific purpose and is vital to the mag in its current form and is unlikely to change for that reason.

A column idea, if it's a really good one as you say, seems like the best suggestion to make as their columns are their most unique aspect.

A cool idea might be a gamer's advice column, something distinct from the usual letters section where readers can send in specific gaming related questions (not even necessarily strategy or cheat related questions, though certainly those would be welcome as this is Tips & Tricks, but even just life and lifestyle related questions asked by gamers and answered from a gamer's point of view. That might not really fit in with what Tips & Tricks has going on, but it would be cool.

Whenever I've seen lifestyle articles in other mags (almost inevitably about getting girls to play games with you or like you even though you're a gamer" it's always jokey and vaguely insulting to the intelligence. Something sincere and honest would be nice.

Eh, that's the best I can come up with. Sorry I can't be more help. Good luck with the job.

I know of but have never read this magazine. With that in mind...

Bruce vs Tom from Computer Gaming World run a really interesting blog/diary feature that may work. It's hard to work into a tips and tricks magazine, but you could have a pair of writers who try out different modes or features accessible using various tips and tricks (to hilarious results).

I could really see this working!
