I was going to buy this issue but I didn't have enough money to include it to this week's buy. I'm just wondering and I'm asking the people who bought the issue whether or not it was worth it. Was it a good start to a series?

If you're really not here to answer the question, don't bother to post at all. I'm here to ask whether or not it is worth it. Please don't force me to buy a comic when it means I have to dish out a couple of my own dollars to buy it.

Hi. It was a decent story, Showed Travis landing in Skartaris and talked about a war between Shamballah and a neighbouring land (I forget the name).
Not too sure how close it is to the original series, but seems to following the mythos of the Warlord. The only problem with the book is the art. It is absolutely horrid, even the Hannah Barberra cartoon's like the Superfriends of the 70s had better art! The art was so poorly done it was hard to see what was going on in the panels. But give it a try, I dont regret buying it.

Honestly, I'm unsure whether I liked it or not...
There's beheadings, scantily-clad wimmen, sea serpents, and war on the horizon. Always a plus, imho.
The writing was decent, though I sometimes felt like I wanted the issue to just "hurry the heck up!" so I could be done with it. Still, not so bad that I couldn't dig what was going down.
The artwork is a misfire for me. There were times I wanted a good ringside seat to see what was happening (ie the events I described above), yet didn't get enough detail for a big bang.
However, I like the WARLORD and my curiosity is piqued... even though we know what happened to the proverbial cat.
Is it worth it? Well, yeah. You're interested enough to pose a question about it, and it's only the initial issue, so I'd say give'er a go.

I ike the story, and yes I also have to say I don't like the art. I will still getting the next issue because I think the story is pretty solid,

One of those Set-it-all-up (-again) first issues; pretty drab for me: but I am (still!) a big Mike Grell "Warlord" fan and this series has serious work to do to match up.
Is it worth buying? Welllll..... how much do you care about Travis Morgan, the Warlord? I like the character, really liked the first series (up to a few issues past Grell's work); so it was worth it to me to support a new attempt. Without that, I probably would've regretted the expenditure of funds and not particularly sought out issue 2.
Sigh: gotta agree--the artwork was heavily heavily muddy, chose odd moments to depict and seemingly ignored more intriguing scenes; feel like I did about "Howling Commandos"--god I wanted to like the book, but no--. At least here I've got the promise of a good character's return. The writing was only so-so, for me.
Over all grade: C+. sigh.

I liked the story, but the art left a lot to be desired.
I'm used to the fine line of Mike Grell, though, whereas Bart Sears has a thick line that's heavy on shadows.
The story was classic Bruce Jones (he wrote the best Kazar and the best Incredible Hulk) and that's always good. This actually has a Kazar vibe running through it.
Yes, it's definitely worth checking out.

I don't really have anything new to say. I bought this because I really liked the original Warlord. Plenty of action in the first issue. The drama skews towards the melo-. Unthrilled with the art.

What waas that statue of the warlord that they showed in the book, was there already another warlord before travis?

I was thinking of trying this book out myself, mostly FOR the Bart Sears art. I love both creators. Bruce Jones was the only man to make me care about The Hulk. Sears Crossgen work was legendary. I didn't really know much about the character or his continuity however.
Having read many responses, I guess it really isn't for me. Sears art is an acquired taste, and his recent pencils aren't nearly as defined as his Crossgen stuff from four or five years ago.

I never followed the old Warlord series -- except for a few issues in which Power Girl guest-starred. So all I know of Travis Morgan comes from those few issues and what I read in Who's Who.
However, I've been more open to trying different titles lately, so I've currently added Jonah Hex and now Warlord to my reading list.
First issue of Warlord is part I of an origin story. It reminds me of Flash Gordon a bit. Nothing ground-breaking here, but it's a solid-adventure story.
Bart Sears' artwork is better here than it was on Captain America & Falcon, but it's muddier than it was on The First. I'd like to see him tone down the heavy inks, but other than that -- I don't have a problem with the art.
I'll probably continue buying it up until issue 6 at least. Then, it depends on what else I pick up after Infinite Crisis ends and Marvel's new series begins.

I'd been anticipating this, since I used to read Grell's Warlord a good bit, but...really...could those inks have been any heavier and thicker? I was almost scared to touch the page for fear of smearing and smudging. Heavens to Betsy!

I think it should be stepped into, it looks like it could get good. It wasn't bad enough to make me want to burn it, but it wasn't super great. give it a shot you'll probably like it.

I was so excited that they were starting this comic again, The Warlord was my favorite comic of all time.
But, I was a little disappointed, usually over the years the artwork gets even better. But, I think the new artwork sucks! It looks like chicken scratch
Does anyone else agree?
p.s.
Were is Travis Morgans awesome winged helmet?

That's just Bart Sears' style. It gives a very primal feeling, which is appropriate for the comic, but the facial details could be stronger.
As for the actual story, this one really frustrated me. I hate "teaser" first issues, where they barely set up the premise, tell you virtually nothing about the main character, and hope you'll come back out of sheer curiosity. This issue gave almost no hints what this title is going to be like. I'm really not sure I'll be coming back for #2.

I'll be coming back for #2, yet am another who couldn't dig the artwork. I understand it's his style, but it just isn't for me.
Ah well, huh?

I didn't mind the art that much and I enjoyed the story. I think that they didn't really reveal that much about the character as they were focusing more on the world that he was about to inhabit.
I'll definitely be picking up the second issue. If only to find out if killing that thing was a fluke.

That's just Bart Sears' style.
That doesn't excuse poor work, IMO. Personally, I think this was some of the worst stuff I've ever seen Sears do. His CrossGen art was much better than this.

Great story, nice to see him back, but yes the art was hideous! Archie comics has better art. Ive seen better art from the likes of Don Heck.
This title may do well if DC would place a more capable artist on the book.

Yeah, I've got to agree with most of the comments about the art. All in all I thought the book was ok...but not great. I don't think I'll be picking up the next issue.

Sears seems to have a polarising effect amongst fans. I loved his artwork on Warlord, and will definitely be back for issue 2.
I felt that the story was somewhat lacking. Of course, it's only the first issue, and it was all setup, so I'm sure it will get better with issue 2.
Still, I'd love to see Mike Grell on Warlord again.

I think getting someone else to do inks would be the best bet. His layouts are certainly dynamic.
It was a solid lead-in first issue IMO and I'll be coming back.

His CrossGen art was much better than this.
I really miss CrossGen... *sigh*
I'll be back for issue 2... but I also wasn't too fussy on the art.
This reminds me of Marvel's New Invaders... great story but people couldn't get past the art and the book tanked despite being well written.
I hope if the artwork remains at its current state that DC replaces Sears rather than let the book die.

I'd love to see Mike Grell on Warlord again.
Me, too.
I wasn't too impressed with the first issue and I highly doubt that I'll buy the next issue.

How long ago did this come out? And how did I miss it?

Since #2 comes out this coming Wednesday, I'd say about a month ago. But believe me, you're not missing anything.
