I think this has been disscussed here before but I had this conversation yesterday with an old film teacher of mine and wanted to share with the rest of you here and get your opinions.

After a long and painful process we agreed on a top ten of greatest movie deaths. Like the the thread title warns, if you havent seen one or all of the movies on this list then beware of spoilers.

10. the Old Guy in the oil tanker's hull (Waterworld)
9. Muldoon (Jurassic Park)
8. Admiral Ozzel (Empire Strikes Back)
7. Stansfield (Leon the Professional)
6. Richard III (Ian McKellan's Richard III)
5. O-Ren (Kill Bill V1)
4. All the heads of the Five Families (Godfather)
3. Darth Vader (Return of the Jedi)
2. Khan (Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan)
1. Captain Steven Miller (Saving Private Ryan)

One thing I should point out, we excluded from the list anyone who comes back to life, so Optimus Prime, Starscream, Spock, and others like them arent on it.

I personally liked Budd's (Sidewinder) death from Kill Bill 2. A nasty betrayal played out quite effectively and showing a pleasingly vicious side to Darryl Hannah.

Why didn't Boromir make the list? His death in LOTR was one of the finest and most heroic I've seen recently.

Bonnie & Clyde's death scene was a classic.

That's the first time i've seen Waterworld in a top ten list that didn't have the word "Suck" in the title.

Mel Gidsons death scene as William Wallace in Braveheart was one of the most moving and heroic in film history.

It would have to be near the top for me.

I wouldnt really count that as a death since he's still alive and kicking when the scene ends. And this being a Monty Python movie, one should go with a definate on-screen demise rather than assume someone kicks the bucket off-screen.

I don't know if it's necessarily "Top Ten", but I really LOVE Dee Wallace Stone wolfing out on a live news broadcast at the end of The Howling, before being shot with a silver bullet! Eerie and humorous at the same time.

Chrissie's death while skinny-dipping in the beginning of Jaws. A classice scene.

3. The dude who got his face smashed in during the beginning scenes of Irreversible. It was...something I'd never seen before.
2. The villain's suicide at the end of Old Boy. It wasn't just the suicide but that whole scene on the bridge, I thought it was a beautiful scene. That sounds kinda weird.
1. Willem Dafoe's death scene in Platoon. The slow motion, the music, the final pose. I loved it.

10) 28 Days Later - The Eye Gouge

Toward the end of this movie, you're sure you've seen just about every way for a zombie to kill a person, or vice versa, and to be honest, you knew the evil army sargeant was gonna get it hard, but when the hero grabs his head and sticks his thumbs all the way through the guys eye ....Whoa

9) Silence of the Lambs - The Cage

A scene that included a) beating someone to death with a night stick, b) disembowling same person and c) slicing off and wearing another person's face...that's some serious violence.

8) American History X - The Curb

If you've never seen the movie, I won't describe the scene, I'll just say it involves a curb, a mouth, and a boot. Man...my jaw hurts typing this.

7) The Godfather - Sonny at the Tollbooth

It's intense...it's violent...it's The Godfather.Something like 200 squibs were put all over James Caan's body, that's dedication to the craft.

6) The Hitcher - The Girlfriend Splits

Tieing Jennifer Jason Leigh to two separate eighteen wheelers, and putting one in drive. An off-camera act, so you're left to wonder if all four appendages popped, or was it a clean break at the waist.

5) American Psycho - The Hatchet

This is another off-camera death scene on the list, but I gave it style points for having Hip to be Square playing in the background.

4) Brain Dead - The Death Of The Vicar

Father McGruder: "I kick ass for the Lord!" With a line like that how can it not be in the list.

3) Chuck Norris in Way of the Dragon

simply gets the crap beaten out of him

2) Psycho - Shower stabbing scene

Surely i don't need to explain this.

1) Dennis Hopper in True Romance

I love this scene it probably one of my favourite scenes in any movie. Its a well acted scene between Christopher Walken and Dennis Hopper.

On a sidenote i would say Trinitys death in Matrix Revolutions was the worst i thought that scene would never end i was begging her to hurry up and die.

I thought V's demise in the movie version of V for Vendetta was quite well done.

Guld Goa Bowman in Macross Plus also deserves a mention, ramming his YF-21 fighter into the X-9 Ghost to save everyone.

However, the best death I can think of off the top of my head is...

The main character in Second Coming, a BBC Production which was basically a What If ... Jesus Christ returned in Wales.

I wouldnt really count that as a death since he's still alive and kicking when the scene ends. And this being a Monty Python movie, one should go with a definate on-screen demise rather than assume someone kicks the bucket off-screen.

Why are there 2 pages after this and no one pointed out the obvious flaw in this description of the Black Knight's fate in HOLY GRAIL? ;) :p

Most of my faves have already been mentioned (Hauer in Blade Runner, Slim in Doc Strangelove, Pacino in Scarface, Bonnie and Clyde). But I didn't see these listed, so I'll toss this assortment in:

Frank White (Christopher Walken) in King of New York
Brandt (Taye Diggs) in Equilibrium
Joker (Jack Nicholson) in Burton's Batman
Ivan Putin (Peter Firth) in Hunt for Red October ("You arrogant ass! You've killed us!")
Dino Velvet (Peter Stormare) in 8MM ("I'm supposed to have something more....cinematic...")
Little Bill Daggett (Gene Hackman) in Unforgiven ("I'll see you in hell, William Munny!" "Yeah..."

Okay, ignoring characters that return (and not in an animation error, like my number 3 choice) otherwise Optimus Prime would be number 1. I cried when I saw that movie the first time. Prime was/is my ultimate fictional hero and his death really shook me up. A lot. My best friend at the time accidentally broke my toy around that time. I smashed his head into the wall. Heh.

10. Hudson (Aliens)

9. The Kurgan (Highlander)

8. Kahega (Congo)

7. Ironhide (Transformers: The Movie)

6. King Kong (Peter Jackson)

5. Harry Stamper (Armageddon)

4. Hector (Troy)

3. Brawn (Transformers: The Movie) - not the cause of death, but the manner in which he died.

2. Mani (Brotherhood of the Wolf)

1. Boromir (The Fellowship of the Ring)

Buliwyf in The 13th Warrior. " 'Lo, there do I see my father. 'Lo, there do I see my mother, and my sisters, and my brothers. 'Lo, there do I see the line of my people back to the beginning. 'Lo, they do call to me. They bid me take my place among them in the halls of Valhalla. Where the brave...may live...forever."

That gets me everytime I watch the movie.

I can't really think of 10 deaths that I liked, but one of my favorites is that one lady at the beginning of Cliffhanger. It scared the hell out of me 10 years ago, and it scared the hell out of me last Tuesday on Encore.
