sounds pretty disappointing so far so I hope there is a lot more coming. We already have a devil by the deed hardcover (even if it is out of print) and while the leatherbound B,W&R sounds cool I dont feel that those stories are the ones closest to many fans hearts.
What we need are trades of everything that has never been collected, hardcover or not. It is frustrating to not be able to lend someone a trade of the best Grendel has to offer (God and the Devil and Devil's Reign) not to mention the incubation years which are just brilliant.
Silverback, A1 #4, the comico black book...so many extras to throw into some new grendel trades. Also the 4 batman/grendel issues as a trade would make a killing - throw in Devil Quest with it, lead right into four devils one hell...
I guess my wildest dreams were just hoping for Mage-style hardcovers of "The Complete Grendel" volumes 1-4 or what have you where we finally get everything.

Has it really been 24 years already?
God this making me feel old.
I was first introduced to Grendel at a very young age. The only place that would sell it was this out of the way Drugstore. It was the Comico Christine Spar story that absolutely knocked my socks off as a kid. I loved it so much that it was the very first T-shirt I ever bought of a comic. I had that thing for years.

I hope they do another printing of Devils QUest. I can't find that book anywhere. The new Hunter Rose story by Wagner sounds cool.

What we need are some new stories! How many years has it been since there has been anything new? 3-4?

Well maybe that's why Wagner is writing and drawing one (his "manga format" book).

Interesting to hear that the Grendel film will be based on Christine's story. I agree with the reasoning--she's a much more sympathetic character than Hunter--but Hunter's really the most iconic Grendel, and there's so much backstory that I'm not sure that the film would really "click" if it skipped over "Devil by the Deed."

i think the film might be better served even if it was set in the grendel tales era. Hell, just make a film out of war child...it could be done.
The big problem with the christine spar story on film is that it will become just another aeon flux/ultraviolet/catwoman vehicle with a poster of our girl with big cleavage holding a weapon looking badass. and it will fail miserably.

It all depends on how they handle it. Christine Spar is a very complex character (in fact, probably my favorite female character in comics) and she has the potential to be another Ellen Ripley instead of another Aeon Flux.

I'd prefer a movie based on the Hunter Rose years, but that's just me.
Speaking of which, is Devil by the Deed available in TPB format? I'm looking for it and I can't find it.
With the success of the TPB format, I think Dark Horse should re-release the whole series chronologically in TPB, featuring newly designed covers and convenient numbering on the spine. Why not? They did it for Sin City.

It looks like "Devil by the Deed" is currently out of print. There will be a hardcover re-released for the anniversary.

I'd buy that. I've been aching to see "Devil Child" reprinted and in the proper order, at least.

Concrete is receiving the same treatment.
Who knows? Maybe we'll get it after all. Wagner did say this:
Also, pretty much everything Grendel is going to go back into print. Some volumes have been out of print for a while.
That's pretty ambiguous, but I'm holding out hope.

Christine Sparr is the most sympathetic character but a good part of her is that she's a writer who wrote a book on Hunter Rose/Grendel and who is Stacy Palumbos daughter, who was the ward of Rose. Not to mention that Argent hates, not Christine Sparr, but Grendel.
Christine's story is too complicated, with Kabuki-childstealing-vampires, a Native American wolf creature, mother seeking revenge for a her dead son, her little war against the antagonisitic police, the story goes from San Fran to NY, she's part of the Grendel legacy, etc. I think theres too much there to compress into a movies 90 minute time limit. So more than likely, they're going to have to cut a whole lot of story out, and my guess, the Hunter Rose back story.
The original story itself feels cinematic and more straightforward. Not only that, but they could save the Christine Sparr story for a possible sequel if it were successful enough.
I really wish Wagner would let someone reprint his original Devil By The Deed story, when his art looked very manga influenced.

i would imagine they would cut out hunter rose, cut out argent (or at least alter his backstory) and make tujiro the main badguy.
