Plissken was forced to play a B-Ball game. Full court. Make a shot every 10 seconds or you are shot. Miss and you are shot. Try to escape and you are shot. First three shots go fine. He makes the fourth from half court just at the buzzer. The fifth shot is thrown full court just at the buzzer, and he made it.

Kurt Russel made the shot himself, after about 1000 tries. And considering Plissken has no depth perception, it's pretty badass.

In Henry Jaglom's Last Summer in the Hamptons, there's a scene with the late, great Viveca Lindfors (you probably know her best from the movie Stargate), where she's watching a film that she actually was in as a much younger woman. She tells one of the house guests that she had no idea what she was playing when she did the film, but she gets it now, and she could really give the part all of the emotional complexity it needs, but she's too old, and could never play the part looking like an old woman.

The scene always stayed with me, and was further impacted by Annie Reinking when she accepted the Tony for the choreography of the revival of Chicago, and that it was the greatest thing in the world to find the one thing you want to do for the rest of your life, and the worst to lean it's the one thing you CAN'T do for the rest of your life.

Then, a year or so ago, I saw Charles Barkley on Oprah and he was talking about how basketball was something that he'd done every day of his life, until he retired. Then, it instantly became something he could never do again. He's too good for a pick-up game in the park, and his abilities are waning, so he can't play with pros.

I'm adding quotes in some of these as they helped define the scene.

"Luke, I am your father." - Empire Strikes Back

"I'll bet you can squeal like a pig" "Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee" - Deliverance

"Fire" - Captain Kirk's line in Wrath of Khan as the nearly crippled Enterprise sneaks up on Khan's ship in the space cloud and attacks.

Across a meadow The Duke on horse back faces off against Lucky Ned Peper[robert Duval] and three other members of his gang.

Duval,"You think one on four is a dog fall?"
Wayne, "I mean to kill ned in one minute or see you hanged in Fort Smith at judge Parker's convinence, which will it be?"

Duval, "I find that bold talk from a one eyed fat man."

Wayne, "Fill your hands you Son of a Bitch!"

Putting the reigns in his teeth he charges the four of them firing pistol and winchester. Next stop Oscar. :evilsmile

The scene in Star Trek: the Undiscovered Country, where Spock faces off with Valeris in sickbay, telling her to shoot him. She says she doesn't want to, and he tells her "What you want if irellevent, what you have chosen is at hand." Great scene, especially since that part was originally meant to be Saavik.

There are so many movie scenes which stand out for me. So I'm listing 10 movie scenes which I love.

1) Heat – Where Hanna (Pacino) and McCauley (DeNiro) face off in their final showdown. Pacino walks over after shooting DeNiro.
DeNiro: “I told you I’m never going back.”
Pacino: “Yeah.”
They both hold hands and the end credits roll with Moby playing in the background.

2) Miller’s Crossing – Bernie Bernbaum (John Turturro) pleads for his life out at Miller’s Crossing while Tom Reagan (Gabriel Byrne) walks him further into the bushes to kill him.

3) The Big Lebowski - Jesus and the bowling ball scene.

4) The Thin Red Line – The moment when Private Witt is cornered by Japanese soldiers. The sudden realisation in his face speaks volumes.

5) Mulholland Drive – When Rita and Betty go to Club Silencio.

6) Scanners – The awesome exploding head scene.

7) One Day in September – Where the daughter explains the last memory of her father. The father she never got to know. Very moving.

8) Batman Begins – The final scene on the roof with Batman and Jim Gordon.
Jim Gordon: Take this guy... armed robbery, double homicide... has a taste for theatrics, like you... he leaves a calling card.
[Gordon hands Batman a clear plastic evidence bag with a playing card inside it]
Bruce Wayne: [Batman turns the card over to reveal that it's a Joker card] I'll look into it.
Jim Gordon: [Batman turns to leave] I never got to say thank you.
Bruce Wayne: And you'll never have to

9) On Her Majesty’s Secret Service – The beach rescue scene where Bond must save the gorgeous Diana Rigg.

10) Warriors – At the end, when Luther taunts the warriors. “Warriors! Come out to play-i-ay!”

Road to Perdition

The scene where Tom Hanks massacres the entire Rooney gang in the rainstorm. First all you hear is the rain. Then the haunting music. No other sounds, not even that of the machine gun taking out Rooney’s men. As Hanks approaches Newman, the rain becomes prominent again. Then one line from Newman. And, finally, the sound of the gun fills the scene. All the acting needed was visual, all the power of the scene built toward that final explosion of sound. It couldn’t have been done better.

Open Range

In the middle of a long gun fight that has a lot of breaks and pauses, the main villain threatens the entire town as he sees a few of them starting to move up to help out Kevin Costner and Robert Duvall against his gang. “I’ll crush any man that stands with them,” he yells, and then to one man in particular he adds, “McClendon, it doesn’t matter whether you run or stay. You and your boys are already dead.” At that point a woman stand up and states firmly, “McClendon is out friend,” and looks significantly across to her husband, who immediately steps forward, gun ready. That’s the whole movie. Five seconds of screen time says it all.

They Live. After shooting Roddy Piper and he is dying on the building he flips off the helicopter then dies. of course the bank scene with the famous, "I'm here to chew bubblegum and kick ass, I'm all out of bubblegum".

Revenge of the Sith: Obi-Wan jumping right into the middle of General Grievious army and basically kicking the crap out of them. (never mess with Obi-wan)

CaptainAwesome
02-25-2006, 05:40 PM
Indianna Jones and the Last Crusade: Indy and Henry are on the motorcycle and Indy just killed a bunch of Nazis. He starts laughing and smiling then he looks at his dad. I swear Harrison Ford goes through about five facial expressions in about 2 seconds. Amazing.

The Exorcist: When the preist approaches the house and the light is coming through the window. Priceless.

Once Upon a Time in the West: Charles Bronson gets off the train, one of the 3 killers says "I guess we didnt bring enough horses." Bronson shakes his head and says "Looks like you brought 2 too many." BANG BANG BANG! Nuff said.

I finally saw the new King Kong. MAN! That movie was in-smeggin-credible!

Obviously the climb up the Empire State Building at the end.

Also, the scene where Ann Darrow(Naomi Watts) entertained Kong with her vaudville routine, and Kong laughing at her pratfalls, but not so much at her juggling.

Also, before the climb, where Kong and Ann are having fun sliding on the ice pond in Central Park. Then the Army horns it, dammit.

Other movie scenes that stood out for me, in no particular order:

Jimmy Stewart running down Main Street in Bedford Falls shouting "Merry Christmas" to everything and everyone, "It's a Wonderful Life".

Twenty mailmen(I counted) burying the judge under an avalanche of letters to Santa, as Gaily's defence that Kris Kringle is the true Santa, "Miracle on 34th Street"(original)

Gandalf standing against the Balrog, "Fellowship of the Ring". "YOU! SHALL NOT! PASS!"

Spider-Man's showdown with Goblin at the Queensboro Bridge, "Spider-Man", especially when the crowd of onlookers start throwing stuff at the Goblin. "He's a New Yorker, ya freak! You mess with one of us, you mess with all of us!" Also, when the train passengers carry an unconscious and unmaksed Spider-Man to safety in "Spider-Man 2", and one of them says, "He's just a kid, no older than my son!" That brought it home.

Superman saving Air Force 1, "Superman", especially the pilot's reaction. "Fly. Don't ask, just--fly. We've got something. I don't know what it is, just--trust me."

Woody rallying the broken toys to attack Sid in "Toy Story". "So play--NICE!"

The CPR scene, "The Abyss". Not a lot of people liked that movie, but I enjoyed it.

The swordfight between Will Turner and Jack Sparrow, "Pirates of the Carribean". Especially when Jack pulled a gun.
Will: You cheated!
Jack(shrugging his shoulders): Pirate.

- "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die."

- For all the ups, and downs, and downs of the prequels, Anakin vs Vader sure paid off.

- Way of the Gun - "You shut that ****s mouth up before I ****-start her head." That and the final extended gun battle. Bullet after bullet after bullet.

I was just thinking about how awesome that scene was the other day. That's really a great, underrated, action movie. I think the pan out while he's fighting with the music worked well. And of course he won.

Similarly, I really liked the scene in Serenity were the girl goes balls out against the mutants, and there I really did wish they showed more of the fight.

That's a wonderful scene but I was already going to name the scene in the movie at the beach house towards the end. Beautifully shot, it couldn't possibly be more powerful.

Clarice's talks with Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs all were remarkably well acted and directed. I especially like during the one where they talk about "the screaming of the lambs", and they do this close up of Anthony Hopkins. All you can see is his perfectly white shirt and his head, looking disembodied and like a fallen angel. And then he finishes saying what he has to say, and moves his head a little, and the illusion is gone, and he's just another psycho in jail.

Oh Yeah. I always combine that with what Zaius tells Taylor before they part.

T: What's out there?

Z: You're not going to like what you find

I remember watching the movie for the first time and being freaked out by that line.

The storming of the beach in Private Ryan. Proof that war is hell.

Leon shooting one of Stanfield's guys and telling him before he dies "no women. no kids"

Batman giving the beatdown to several Joker thugs then beckoning Bob the Goon to come get his beatdown only to have Bob run away like a 2-year old.

Batman and Joker fighting inside the remains of a mockup of Gotham in Mask of the Phantasm.

Superman floating outside the Daily Planet office and telling Zod "General, would you care to step outside?"

Paul vs Feyd in David Lynch's Dune. I still love the line "Why delay the inevitable? I will kill you."

Paul telling the Revend Mother "Why don't you try looking into that place you dare not look? You will find me there staring back at you."
