Is this series any good? The old or new one. Is he a good writer or just a good Artist.

Depends on your personal tastes.

Personally I really love his art. However, The new Fathom series is drawn by Koi Turnbull (a new artist) and not Michael Turner (who only did a few covers).

I'm currently really enjoying the series and I'd recommend you check it out.

I didn't read the whole series - but bought some of the 3 issue collected editions a few years ago.

Turner's sequential storytelling is very good, and perhaps under appreciated by comic fans

His character designs (all the women look alike) and themes (very shallow - heh - I said "fathom" was "shallow") are not so good or original.

My summary - pretty pictures but neither the plot or that characterization "hooked me."

I really enjoyed the original Image series.

But the current Aspen series (IMO) is rubbish.

I bought the original series and liked it alot specially cause of the art and the series had some pretty good ideas it still does and it wouldnt surprise me that the artist goes on to be a superstar artist in the future... like talent caldwell the second artist to draw the book.

The pictures are very pretty. Very. Michael Turner draws beautiful figures, but his story telling is not the best. The story for the original series was creative, but not very interesting. After the original arc/series was completed, I didn't feel the need or desire to read any more. But damn I sure love to go back and look at the drawings every once in a while.

Go read it yourself, never post on a messege board to get advice as a majority of post will always be negative.

As to the topic at hand... Turner's art is probably up there with the likes of jim lee. I prefer his art over lee's. The story.... Arc one in the image books was amazing, dont let these post fool you. It was fresh, it felt like a movie, it was well thought out and done perfectly, except for the delays but he did get cancer so it can be forgiven. The new aspen titles.... well koi is not as good as turner but the story is coming along nicely. Id give it a shot if you have the image series, otherwise you are missing some info.

I don't care what the haters say, I love Michael Turner's art.

Speaking of Turner, when can we expect an ongoing Ekos series? I'm just checking to make sure it's still coming out, because I'm buying it when it does.

I heard the TV show Surface was based on this series. Any similarities in plot or characters?

Maybe. After the events of the first arc, a hole got punctured in the earth's surface and some massively predator-type (possibly even reptile-like) fishies came swimming out and ate some humans.

In Surface, there's some ugly reptile-like fishy types which have swum out from this really, really deep hole and are eating not only humans, but entire ships.

In the second series of Aspen/Fathom, all the water parted from the seas for a while...as in they formed into balls and defied gravity. In Surface, a hole happened and all the water got sucked in.

As for characters, I guess like Aspen Matthews, the main female lead (that woman smoking stuff with the really, really short skirt in "The Practice") is ALSO a marine biologist...I think.

There's some military involvement in both series.

Aspen Matthews is now on the run. So is/was the female lead.

Funny thing. He's actually niether.

You know I dont like monet as a painter but that doesnt mean I dont think he is good.

Not quite sure how anyone can look at turners art and not think he is a good artist, doesnt mean you have to like it though.

I think he is damn good myself.

You need to read it for yourself.

I like it and I buy almost every Aspen comic that is published.

You can find a few good deals on ebay. That's where I bought a lot of the back issues.

When is Ekos coming out?

I agree, Michael Turner is a very talented artist- he's like number one in that category every month in Wizard Magzine. I do agree though that his women all look pretty similar, but there are some differences here and there. Overall, he's a great artist.

As for writing, he's also pretty good. I actually picked up my first issue of Soulfire today, which he co-writes and draws, and I was instantly enthralled by it. I've never read a sci-fi fantasy comic like this one before, and I am in instant love with this series. It has a very interesting plot and good characters- I definately reccomend it.
