View Full Version : What's It Like Being Tall?

Well just wanted to get a perspective on this. So to all the tall people(around 6'0 and up) what is it like being tall?
Winslow

I'm 6'4
But don't consider myself "tall"
It's all relative . . .

I'm a modest 6'0. It's nice being able to reach things, and to be able to see over the majority of people. But it's hard to squeeze through a crowd, or to deal with low ceilings. Also, shopping for clothes makes you feel like a freak. A lot of nice shirts stop at the 34" sleeve length, so I generally have to pay more to get the 36".

I agree with Winslow. I'm 6'7", so I consider him "short."
Of course, my little... er, younger brother is 6'10", so to him, I'm short.
I hated being tall when I was in elementary school because I was skinny and uncoordinated (I like it much better now, being fat and uncoordinated).
But, between my sophomore and junior years in high school, I put on 30+ lbs of muscle and finally "grew into" my body and, after that, I liked being tall.
Of course, it comes in pretty handy in most situations in life except for buying clothes or traveling on airplanes.

I'm 6'1", I'm glad I'm not shorter.
So it's pretty cool except small cars are uncomfortable, I can't imagine how it must be if you're really tall like 6'4" or more.

I'm 6'2" and don't consider myself to be overly tall. I've had a lot less problems with my height in general and more with the way that I'm built. I'm built like Barney Rubble...short legs and a very long torso. I only have a 31" inseam, which is about average for someone around 5'10". So I have a hell of a time buying shirts. And cars that are comfortable for normal 6-footers have me hitting my head on the ceiling.
I'm 5'7 and consider myself taller than the average italian male.
I'm the center for the Italian National Basketball team.

Yup.
As a Division III basketball player, everyone on the frontline was taller than me (usually 6'5 or taller) . . . so I always considerred myself "short" on the court.
But I wasn't affected by "the disease" - so I could jump higher than all of 'em.*
* yes - this was a pathetic "glory days moment" brought to you by Winslow's mid-life crisis.

To echo the other guys here, I'm 6'4", and I don't really consider myself tall. I know that I am compared to most people, but it's not really something that I think about. The only time I think about it is when I bonk my head on something (like low-hanging signs from the ceiling at grocery stores - a pet-peeve), or when I'm travelling (cars and airplanes, ugh).
I think being tall is something that other people notice more than I do.

Its all relative. I'm 6'3". The same height as when I was in the 8th grade. That was tuff. Being alot taller then most at the time, and having not "grown into" my body yet, I was a geek. But by the tiem of the 9th grade it didnt matter much anymore.
A weird expierence, I was staying in the same hotel as a pro womens basketball team. It was strange being in the lobby with a bunch of women who were about as tall as I am, or taller.

This reminds me of a sketch from, I think, the Frost Report(early sketch comedy show that had John Cleese)...
John Cleese(Tall guy): I get a feeling of superiority over them.
Middle height guy: I get a feeling of inferiority from him, but (looks down at short guy) a feeling of superiority over him.
Short guy: (looking up at others) I get a pain in the back of my neck.

What's it like? Combine my height with my confidence and my traits...and women are usually the ones coming on to me in various way. Just the way I like it. But being tall in high school and driving an average car? Not that great. Driving a Ford Sable is not what a call a "good" car for guys 6'2 and over. But other than that..it's been a good run. I'm fastet than I look and that made fights easy when people got halfway smar. Yeah..all in all, I love being "tall".

Ok I might catch some crap for this but I'm going to spill the beans and tell the truth.
Being tall rocks. It's everything you shorter people dream it might be like and so much more.
Tall people have special clubs and signals to each other that say "dude, aren't you glad you aren't like one of THEM!? (meaning you short people).
We stand with our noses above the reek and always have a great seat at a parade.
I'd give away more secrets but well, the internet is only so anonymous...

Geez what is it with the reverse heightism in this place? The real victims of discrimination here aren't the tall or the short, it's those of us in the middle, the average height person.
What, you think we have it easy? Short people want us to get things off high shelves for them, but we can't, 'cause we're not tall enough, and that just makes the little people mad. Tall people are constantly looking down on us for no other reason than that they're tall.
Gilda, 5' 5" proud to be average.

I'm 6'2".
I slouch a bit too much but even so, a lot of my friends wind up being by height or taller.
And the funny thing about the way heads work is that even if my friends are 5'8" or 5'9", it's like I get that much visibility over them.
Oh... And I feel awkward being taller than most females. I have a pet theory that guys who are equal height to maybe one or two inches taller have a better chance of attracting a partner. I also suspect it makes dancing easier.

Nah, a significant height difference is a big advantage for most dancing. In slow dancing, around 4-5", it allows the shorter partner to lay her head quite nicely on her partner's shoulder. This works best if the dominant partner is the taller one, but it isn't bad the other way, either, as with Emily and me. I'm 4 1/2" taller, which makes the shoulder snuggle work well.
Beyond that height difference, again, with slow dancing, say at 6-9", you can get a really nice chest snuggle going on. When I'm in heels and Emily isn't that's very pleasant.
Also, I think you're off on the part about attracting a partner being easier with a small difference. Men are on average about 5 inches taller than women, so we're conditioned to see differences in that range as "normal." A height difference also tends to imply viscerally a power difference, and many women are attracted to men who seem powerful.
You've got something working for you there; use it.
