So everyone remembers the wave of x books in the early aughts that were basically renamed versions of lower-tier characters right? Agent x was deadpool, soldier x was cable, and x statix was x-force. I got agent x and I liked it pretty much.( This was before I knew what a "Deadpool" was.) And Im just wondering what you guys thought of Soldier X. Keep in mind Cable & Deadpool is one of my favorite books of all time. So should I get it yay or nay?

I didn't like Soldier X at all. IIRC, wasn't it named that to avoid paying Rob some royalties on usage of the name, or something like that?
Anyway, I just didn't like the stories or the art. It turned Cable into a pseudo-mercenary that went around getting involved in 3rd world countries problems.

I never picked it up, so I couldn't say yay or nay. But from what I hear, it was pretty awful. But if you like Cable and Deadpool, you might want to get it only for the "completist" in you, that is if there is a "completist" in you. lol....seriously, I wouldn't waste my time. Unless there is a nice little trade or something...

All those books where retitled with an X in it for sales purposes only, pretty lame.

I seem to remember it being a big deal with Soldier X, though. It seems like they never even used the name "Cable" in any issue at all. And I'm pretty sure it was over royalties to Liefeld. Anyone else remember this, or am I just way off?

When I said sales, I ment legal really. So yeah, there was no legit basis behind it, they might of thrown a half-assed story for it but meh, it was money.

It wasn't about royalties - the comics sales at the time would not have been enough for royalties to be paid out on. It was more likely (as someone said earlier) a sales ploy to get people's interest in the characters - new name means no back history = easier to jump on?

Storywise the Soldier X was a trick played by two government agents assigned to the Cable-file. The Cable-file was a room fool of papers and they decided they couldn't bother reading all of that, so they opened a new file: Soldier X.
As for the series: it depends if you would like it. If you liked the last issues of Cable (TPBs The Shining Path and The End), you will like the early Soldier X. Otherwise chances are you won't. I liked the first issues, but when Tischman and Kordey left the remaining issues where just complete filler.

I'd skip it. The art was pretty illegible, and the plot was only a little better. I love Cable, but I really didn't like Soldier X. I bought the first 9 issues from a quarter bin just for kicks, and I didn't like it. Never read the rest of it.

Kordey was the worst IMO

The artist was the same on the last issues of Cable and in the soldier x series right? So did the last issues of cable suck that bad? Or did Kordey just seem to phone it in on Soldier X?

I say go for it. It was a good book. You MAY have a hard time with the art as it is a bit non-mainstream. I myself loved the art. I seem to be in the minority though.

Wow...a positive review? Thats a first. BTW I love the cover art on soldier X. Who did it? If the interior looks like that then I will definately love it.

The cover artist is the same as the interior artist. Only problem with that is they look completely different. It looks like he actually spent time drawing the covers the inside just looks like crap. Also the story was pretty much crap too. And if you are looking for the Cable that you are getting in Cable/Deadpool then you should pass on Soldier X.
