Why? I remember reading about him in an old issue of Batman where he talks to a mannequin who he calls "circe" and talks to his father who I presumed is dead. He acted very weird then. Now I see Black Mask in the current storyline who is a wise ass who looks to be the head of the mob. And didn't he have a burned freddy krueger like face that he covered with a black/blue mask? Now he has a skeletor face?

Thats because hes a terrible character. Read War Games for more on mask, dont expect much he doesnt improve into War Crimes, and then hes still bad but when you get to the red hood arc, he will become more of a king pin character but it will be much funnier to read. he becomes enjoyable.
Or you might just want to search this forum for Black Mask during War Games, its all explained in posts here from back then. Of course, you could just read War Games, but it is a bit of a drag.

Don't buy War Games!
Save your money, read the post or if you don't care...go to a huge bookstore with a comic book section and read it there.
You won't be sorry!

I thought Black Mask looked and behaved more menacingly in the early 1990s than he does today. I thought the character was at his best when he was tormenting Batman in the months immediately before KNIGHTFALL began back in 1992/1993. He was kind of unique and mysteriously creepy back then.

They basically turned him into the poor mans joker. He's gotten WAY to much exposure lately, imo.

At least if they have the option there to overexpose a 'poor man's joker', they might be able to resist the urge to overexpose the real thing...
then again, considering how much he's popped up lately, maybe not...

Maybe Alexander Luthor has been impersonating Black Mask too! Someone check his eyes!

Black Mask's new "skull" look was first explained during "No Man's Land" in the "Mosaic" story arc (originally published in Batman #565 and Detective Comics #732 and reprinted in No Man's Land, Vol. 2 TPB). Black Mask literally burned the mask off of his face to return to his "true self" or something like that.
