I'm thinking about picking up some of the tpb for the Exiles series, but haven't heard too much about it. How is the writing? Is it worth picking up? Art anygood, etc.? I know there is 11tpb with a 12th one on the way. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Personally I like the first TPBs written by Winnick the best. Austen's are terribly mediocre, though not as bad as some of his other work. I think Beddard lacked a lot of direction in his early stories, but I'm in a minority in this.

I love Exiles.
There have only been three writers on the title. Judd Winnick started it and had somewhere around 30 to 40 issues. Chuck Austen had a few arcs, which were actually very good and fit well into the series, and then Tony Bedard came on as the permanent writer, and he writes it today. He had a slow start, and it was getting a bit boring for awhile, but the last two solid years have been fantastic.

The artists were Mike McKone starting out, then Clayton Henry for a bit, then Mizuki Sakakibara came on with Bedard. She was on the title for awhile, and most recently we've had Paul Pelltier join as the regular artist, which has helped raise Bedard's writing game. Jim Calafiore has been the official fill-in artist since the start of the series, and has helped keep a semi-consistent visual style throughout the books history. There have been various guest artists for short periods here and there such as an arc with Kev Walker.

At best, it's a great, unpredictable series with a constant supply of interesting characters and fun alternate takes on established Marvel idea. At it's worst, it gets a little boring. Overall it's a great series.

I think the whole exiles run have been quite great . And imo even the Austen issues were quite great .
I miss the Winnick era , but so far Bedard is a doing great work .

It's never a bad book, but nothing you can't miss.

I love Exiles. It is one of the books I look forward to every month. The art is usually very good and the writing is on the same level. I recommend this one.

Didn't you only just start reading it, with Longshot's joining? :p

Whereas I've been reading it steadily since the beginning, with the only breaks being the Dominant Species revisiting and the examination of Nocturne's world. And from that standpoint, I can safely say- it's good stuff. ExoKnight, if you're looking to get into it, I'd advise picking up the first trade (Down the Rabbit Hole) to get a sense of the general tone and concept of the series (and because it's just really entertaining), as well as the last couple of trades, that deal with the Exiles taking control of their home base, the Panoptichron, and starting the World Tour (and -- woohoo! -- adding Longshot to the team).

I too have read this series since the beginning and I love Winnick the best but Bedard has grown on me quite a bit. Winnick's With an Iron Fist storyline was my favorite. The last panel with BlackBolt was awesome even though the art was horrible.

My only concern is this book is riding the line for cancelation. It only sells about 30,000 a month. Even thought its steady at a little over 30,000 a month there is no increase. It seems Exiles has loyal buyers, but are not adding any new readers. Gotta any ideas how to change that?

Exiles is CONSISTENTLY good.
I can't remember a time when the book was bad or I couldn't wait to read it.

Exiles was great for the first 25 issues or so. Winnicks stuff is spot on wonderful. Plus he had an incredible artist with him for his run. Lately with Bedard it's been middle to low quality. His Universe tour arc is just horrid. I have been with the book since the beginning, but it's not on my pull list as of last issue. But for a TPB. Definitely pick up the first one!

Jack, seriously. Just because they didn't visit the X-Men 2099...

There have been times this has been my most anticipated book each month (around the #30's and #40's), and while it's still not quite as awesome as it was then, it's always been an entertaining read. Exiles is the "little engine that could" of the X-comics.
By the by, I wouldn't judge it badly because there hasn't been much said about it. I think it's a lot easier to complain about something than rave about it; if it was bad, you'd be hearing plenty.

I find Exiles to be one of the best if not the best X-Titles out there. definitely buy the trades, I don't think you can go wrong

exiles is a pretty boring book for me... they seem to be assembling a nice cast now, but the writing is disapointing. I picked up the two 2099 issues hoping to see all my fave characters again, as they were all prominenntly featured on the cover (yay x-men 2099!!) but it was only spidey and hulk! :(

Exiles was pretty interesting at times, and sometimes it could get a little boring because it would refer to things and characters I wouldn't know of (I'm not THAT well into Marvel Universe)...but although it could get a little bland, it would never get really bad (apart for the Austen revisit of the Parrot Wolves of Doom)...

...right now I can't forgive how randomly they killed Mimic off!

I only really liked it under Winnick and some of Bedard's early stuff, but I don't think it was ever bad. Its gotten a little boring for me as well lately.

My opinion on Exiles: they need to cut ties to the X-men. Fortunitly the new lineup is a broad spectrum of people.

I'm only a newcomer to eXiles and I have to say, i'm finding the current story quite interesting.

That said, i'm really not a fan of some of the cast members such as Morph who really doesn't seem deserving of a 'main' part.

Read the series in order from the beginning. He deserves it. The past few months, though, the focus has been more on why the World Tour is happening and the fallouts it's caused (such as who dies, who joins, where they're going next, etc.).

Morph belongs.

Ive been collecting Exiles since issue 1 and it has always been one of my most dependably good reads every month. Sometimes its my most anticipated sometimes its not, but I have never once considered dropping the book its just too good. I really like the fact that they are mixing the team up at last ad not relying solely on mutants which hopefully will broaden its appeal to new readers because I want this book to stay around for a long time to come. Roll on 100!

I think Sabretooth will die because he will be joining X-men when Mike carey becomes he is the new writer. There can't be two sabretooths

AoA Sabretooth and 616 Sabretooth are very different characters. Having them both in books that aren't even connected isn't going to matter. Hell, they have Spider-Man 2099 now, and Spider-Man is in current books. :p

This book is one of the reasons I still collect comics. I can't stay away from it. First, I would buy some of the early trade paperbacks to get the background of the story. If you jump in right now, i don't know if you would enjoy it as much.

TLO, it's not just because of the X-men 2099 fake out. They've been chasing Proteus for what 5 issues? and are no closer to catching him. The story arc pre-the world tour was a re-hashed Hyperion story and a super let down on who the time broker was. It's just gone down hill in quality. I appreciate the eye roll though.

Exiles is so good that I considered breaking my long-standing vow of never picking up another X-book.

Instead, I declared a loophole for myself: They don't operate in or interact with the 616 universe (much--and the less, the better), so they're not "really" an X book at all. And there's no higher praise I can offer than that.

I'm sorry if the eyeroll came across wrong, Jack- it was meant to be in jest. I was simply poking fun at the fact that from your posts, your biggest problem with the 2099 arc seemed to have been that the X-Men weren't in it. If the humor didn't come through clearly, my apologies.
