I've mentioned in a couple of other posts that I just recently got back into comics and I am trying to get up to date. As far as the x books are concerned, I'm picking up with reading the House of M, then collecting several ongoing series (Uncanny Xmen, Xmen, Astonishing Xmen, Excalibur, X-Factor) post House of M. I don't want to go back any further since with DC and Marvel, my ongoing series pull list is in the 30's. It looks like Deadly Genesis is a good mini to pick up to stay up to date. What about the 198, Son of M, and Generation M? Am I going to be lost at all in the ongoing series without getting these minis? I am also going to follow the Civil War arcs this summer.

You won't be lost. House of M is mostly utterly irrelevant unless you pick up all those ancilliary books you mention. The core books mostly treat HoM like it never happened except for the occasional line about the Sentinels standing guard outside. If you want to see the effects of HoM then by all means get all possible books you mention. Otherwise don't worry.
Sole exception is "Deadly Genesis." It totally retcons Uncanny history but so far in a good way. And while its loosely connected to HoM in that the main protaginist awakens due to HoM, the HoM connection pretty much ends there. And Deadly Genesis is apparently going to lead directly into upcoming Uncanny storylines so you'll be lost if you don't read it.

I actually haven't read House of M yet - I have it ordered on Ebay and I am waiting for delivery. I already have all of the post House of M ongoing books up to date, but I'm waiting to get and read House of M before I read them. I have gathered the basic jist of House of M, but I'm a little surprised to hear the ongoing books are ignoring it like that. If the other books are just fluff that have no effect on the universe, I guess I won't get them.

So you have been picking up the main 8 issues House of M books?
My biggest tip for you would be to get hold of the whole of Deadly Gensis so far, and the decimation issues of X-Men, Uncanny, and possibly Wolverine and New X-Men. And House of M the Day after, if you have not already.
The decimation issues cover the direct fallout from House of M, and will keep you abreast of who lost what powers, and what the future for the X-Books holds. Wolverine will be covering the revelations for him that House of M caused.
Deadly Genesis is imperative. Uncanny X-Men will be based almost exclusively around the events of this series when it ends. It's big twists and changes. Call it a retcon all you like, but you wont be able to dismiss it.

I do have all of the Decimation issues (including Wolverine) and The Day After One Shot, but I will not read them until I get the full House of M (which, like I said, is ordered on Ebay and should be here soon). I definately will get the Deadly Genesis based on what you guys have told me. I don't plan on getting the New X-Men comics - I need to draw the line someplace, and funds are limited. Is New X-Men a "must" of sorts? Would I be missing out on a big piece of the puzzle without it?

Not a must, no. But it's initial events in decimation are happening at the same time as the big panic in House of M #8 and The Day After. However, the mutants being shown as de-powered or not, here, are al X-Men youth members...

I wouldn't reccomend either 3 of those minis. If you're a big Quiksilver fan, then I suppose Son of M is a given. If you dislike Blob, Stacy-X, Chamber, Jubilee, and Moonstar then pick up Generation M.

Yeah, but if you don't read Deadly Genesis you will feel lost when Brubaker starts on Uncanny. The 198 will also show you the current ghetto situation occuring on the Xavier estate.
If you don't read Son of M you probably wont miss a lot, that will be particularly relevent to other books right now. Likewise Generation M is not really essential.
