Hi, I'm an American transplant in the UK. Recently I saw some new eps of JLU. And there were some fairly obscure villains from back in the day. I've looked around online and managed to get most of them, except for two guys named the Monocle and the Dummy. I was hoping someone might able to steer me towards some info or provide a biography. Any input is appreciated!

I think you mean Scarface when you say "The Dummy." Scarface is a Batman villain who is actually a ventriloquist's dummy. However, the dummy runs the gang, calls the shots, and bosses the ventriloquist (Whom he calls "Dummy") around.

I can't help you on Monocle, though.

If it makes you feel any better, I've been reading DC comics for nigh on twenty years, and I have never once seen the Monocle in a story. Or if I have, he left so little impression that I honestly can't remember anything about him. So that's saying something. ;)

The Monocle was an old Silver Age Hawkman villain....As to the Dummy, there actually was a villain called the Dummy. He was a foe of the Golden Age Vigilante.

I think the last time the Monocle showed up in a comic was in Identity Crisis. He is playing cards with Merlyn and Mirror Master.

Yeah like others have said, Monocle is a (for the most part) Hawkman villian who showed up in Identity Crisis, but I believe he later showed up in Manhunter and was killed. I'm not too sure about that though since I don't read the book, but I could have sworn that someone told me that.

Here's what I know about him off the top of my head

-His real name is Johnathan Cheval(I may have spelled that wrong)

-His powers come from his variety of optic lenses, he learned to make them because his family's been making them for years or something like that

-Without his lenses, which mainly shoot lazers and things like that, he has no powers that I know of

-I think he might be french, or maybe he lives in France, something like that.

Hope that helps.

He also showed up, after ID Crisis, in MANHUNTER, with Merlyn and Phobia, helping to free the Shadow Thief.

And let's just say after that story..........he won't be showing up anymore. ;) :p

That is a big help, thanks to you and everyone so far.

So this Dummy, he's a person similar to Toyman or something else?

He's a guys that looked like a ventriliquists dummy. The original gimmick was that his gang thought their boss was communicating via the dummy to keep his identity secret.

From what I can find out, the Dummy had no actual powers, but was an expert at building traps and gimmicks.

He was in the JLA/JSA 3 parter crossover as one of Ultra Humanite's secret society of super villains in the silver age.

So the Dummy is similar to the Batman villains Ventriloquist and Scarface?

Not at all. There was no ventriliquist. They thought there was a radio speaker in the dummy. Also he was a midget who happened to look like a dummy.

Ah, got it. Thanks for clarifying.
