Mignola Explores 'Hellboy' Past and Future

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com)- Comic conventions have become so overrun by other media that "Hellboy" creator Mike Mignola attempts to begin his WonderCon panel by cutting off all questions about a possible sequel to the 2004 spring hit.
"He's written a screenplay and everybody's real jazzed about it," Mignola says of writer-director Guillermo Del Toro. "There's some rewriting going on. Hopefully it'll be his next picture."

The strategy of preemptive attacks doesn't necessarily work, as Mignola is still peppered with questions about his "Hellboy" experience and changes to some of his characters, particularly the series' mild-manned mer-man Abe Sapien, voiced by David Hyde Pierce in the film.

"Working on the film was really interesting," Mignola says, avoiding too much gushing. "The very first time I met Guillermo, I said to him, 'It's your movie. Change whatever you want.' I found as we went along it was a little more difficult to do that."

He continues, "It's one thing with new characters, make them whatever you want, but Abe Sapien I just felt was going down the wrong path. That's the only one I felt I kind of needed to rescue, but even then I tried to take what I liked about the other designers work on Abe Sapien and incorporate that into mine, but it was just gradually steering a little bit back toward mine."

Mignola's own vision of his hell-born red semi-demonic baby is on the verge of changing. After years of drawing and writing for "Hellboy," Mignola is passing the illustrating duties to Duncan Fegredo for a trio of miniseries as he gets his own creative juices flowing on other projects.

"Part of the problem with drawing 'Hellboy' for 12 years is that I've drawn his head so many times and I love drawing this character, but I kind of go 'I've done this. I've done it again,'" Mignola explains. "I'm trying to find a way to reinvent the wheel and so I really need to take kind of a break from the 'Hellboy' stuff."

After Fegredo's run, Mignola will return to draw what he calls the third and final chapter of Hellboy's life, though that chapter could take years to play out. Wherever he goes from there, don't expect Mignola to spend too much time in Hollywood.

"Movie work is not really what I do," he says. "Del Toro likes to have me there. He and I think alike. He comes up with some crazy idea and I'm probably the one guy who says, 'I think I know what you're talking about... Kind of like this...' and I'm able to draw it. But I don't have a future in the movies, which is fine. As I get older, as I do more non-comic stuff, the more I appreciate being alone in my studio doing what I want."

I hope that includes the vampire graphic novel that I've heard about in the past. As much I absolutely love Mignola HB work, I'm definitely jonesin' to see Sai Mignola put his singular style to other projects.

As long as he comes back to HB afterwards of course... :)
