Love him or hate him, writer Chuck Austen is a lightning rod for discussion and CBR News sat down with the scribe to talk about his new book, "Boys of Summer" and fan response to his previous work. In Part One, Austen openly discussed criticisms of his work, the state of the industry and agreed to the ultimate fanboy charity event.

That was a good interview. He really is a decent guy. I didn't mind his stuff, I didn't read the Uncanny run but the X-Men wasn't too bad. He seems like a decent guy.

Wonderful interview! Chuck Austen is a good man. Not a big fan of his Uncanny X-Men, but loved most of his X-Men and his Action Comics. And U.S. War Machine.

I enjoyed his X-Men , Avengers and Action Comics. Its a shame what people will do and how DC black balled him. I pity em...Action truelly was a great comic under Chuck .

Nice candid interview. I really liked his issues of Action. Interesting to learn that he wasn't JD Finn after all.

Yep......Eddie B. was. Its a damn shame what happened to Action. Man did they tank a good thing. Storyline where Lana and Lois are gettin close to a personal battle over Clark.....Pffffffffff.
I wonder if a nice e-mail asking : " Why the blackball , guys ? " would be funny. ;)

Nice interview , and duh arent some people extreme  .
There is nothing in hating the guy's writing , but it should be confined to his writing .. just like Liefield should only be picked upon for his art , without it getting personal .
I'm pretty much over those bad stuff he did in X books .. i liked some of his ideas , and chose to ignore the bad stuff like Draco in "my continuity" .
However , even if i understand how that probably bugged him or still bug him , its a bit of an easy way to dismiss genuine concerns and negative opinions , with the most extreme exemple of fanboys and pissants :D .
Yeah you gotta try new things , but you don try everything that hasnt been done without any kind of logic ...at least not with some properties .
And pretty much what he says about the net is right , as a writer avoid it like the plague . Ok plenty fans were angry , and it ended his runs at both DC and Marvel , however , things would have been the same or worse , had he chickened out , and try to write like more conventional writers . So writers avoid the net like the plague , or only comes there for interviews and answering questions .

Chuck really comes across as a thoroughly decent bloke here, and when you hear him discussing his concepts both for X-Men and Superman - well, I for one - think he really did have some ideas there. They just didn't turn out quite right.
I don't think he deserves the hate he receives, at the level he does. I didn't think all that much to his X-Men work, but can at least see what he was trying to do.

Austen had some great ideas.
He also had some genuinly terrible ideas. Say what you will, his X-Men was always interesting (unlike Milligan, which just bored me to dropping it.)
I always knew he was a good guy. He used to post on X-Fan all the time. And I don't blame him one tiny bit for avoiding the net after that. It was brutal, it was crap. But nobody learns from that lesson, we still get people who just TRASH creators here.
I had no idea that it got to the point where shop owners REFUSED to carry comics he'd written. That is just...the most RIDICULOUS thing I've ever heard. Has anyone refused to carry a John Bryne comic after all the racist idiotic stuff he's said?

Austen is just a guy.
A guy who wrote some stories that some people didn't like much.
He's not a terrorist or a murderer. He doesn't deserve the shit that gets thrown at him.

Reminds me of what the professors keep telling us--you should be able to keep your job if you're two of three things: Good, Timely, or Nice.
Guess he must be pretty punctual.
I admit...it's a little harder to hate him after reading that. He seems like a decent guy with a good sense of humor. And I did like the Juggy/Sammy thing...but Draco...and Skin...
