I bought NBA Live. I haven't played NBA 2K6, but I usually like the Live games better than the 2K games.

The consensus seems to be that 2k6 is a more accurate/realistic sim game, while Live 06 is a more arcadey game, especially with the new freestyle controls.
I've played both on xbox and prefer 2k6, I like using the analog control to shoot the ball. It feels very natural.
Here is a comparison:

It seems to come down to flashy graphics vs playability.

Live 06 has some pretty serious bugs/gameplay flaws, you'll definitely want to try before you buy that one.

Just out of curiousity, what bugs/gameplay flaws are there?

By no means complete, this list includes:
Your player inexplicably passes in an entirely different direction against your input, into opponent hands; up to 90 degrees of blatently false response to your controller input.
The computer can take players and run at SUPER SPEED towards your man and block/foul him. I've had Shaq chase down my Iverson with a 15 foot head start, using turbo at full stamina...
Who needs "realism" or "physics"? Ben Wallace with buzzer beating treys from beyond halfcourt, Nate Robinson consistently dunking on your team over big man triple or quadruple teams, Chucky Atkins power hopping through your Yao Ming who reels back 5 feet; you literally see his layup/dunk go through Yao's body...
They need a turnover? Your player can get swarmed by a double-triple team at insane speeds (see above), they can body you out of bounds with much smaller or weaker players. MOST INFURIATING, your shooting player is often heavily hit on the way up, he limply drops the ball and they grab it. I've had guys commit 15 turnovers in a game, with 13 of those on BS "blocks/steals" like that.
Also incredible idiocy in other situations; they'll take a 3 with their C from halfcourt when down by 2 with 5 seconds left on the clock, triple team your worst shooter while leaving your power dunker alone in the restricted zone, and so on. The Spurs once allowed me to make 9 treys with Mike Miller in the last 2 minutes of a game, with single or no coverage; I think they actually benched Bruce Bowen to put an inferior defender on him...
I've been ahead of the computer by 2, time runs out, they launch a 3 AFTER THE BUZZER (with their player not even leaving the ground, never mind in the act of shooting) and it goes in. It'll tell you that you won, then lost, then won, then the final score shows a loss.
What in the blue hell? Sorry about the rant, but these kind of issues have existed for years and years; even some of the low quality animations (like a teammate checking on an injured player) are identical year after year.

Basketball is the only sports title I don't get anymore. But from what I hear, 2K buries Live. I know the 2K Hockey is better than EA's Hockey title.
As far as everything else, Sega 2K seems to put out a better product sometimes as far as realistic-ness. EA has gone more arcade. Which is fine, but sometimes they just put out crap. Madden 05, NCAA 05 and Hockey 06 are just pathetic.

Headhunter, that sounds like a load of problems. Also out of curiousity, what system do you play Live on?
I have it on X-box and haven't really seen any of the problems you mention. Then again, I like to create a player (of myself) with some awesome skills to run my team. I haven't really had any close games.
