Kingdom Hearts: When the game first came out I thought it would be another crappy Disney game but the game actually turned out to be pretty entertaining and the story was pretty good aswell. I also liked how they blend the Final Fantasy and Disney Universe without making it seem cluttered.

Once again Kingdom hearts, it's THE prime example of a game you thought would suck, but didn't.

Final Fantasy Tactics: I bought this game after FF7 expecting something similar. Played it, hated it, didn't understand it and put it aside only to breeze through it when a gameshark later just to get it out of the way. I came back to it a few years later and gave it another shot....and another and so on.

I now consider this one of my two favorite games, ever (the other being Castlevania: SOTN)

Astro Boy, which was actually a lot of fun, but with no replay value and way too short.

And Kingdom Hearts, of course.

Dragon Quest 8- I was reluctant to buy it at first really because I didn't like the way it looked or felt to me, but after the great reviews I felt I should. I didn't finish it yet, but it's simple and fun. I'm enjoying it.

Devil May Cry- Apparently I lived under a rock forever, because when I bought this game I never heard of it. It was cheap, and looked kind of lame, but I wanted a simple action type game to play around with. Turned out to be amazing. Way beyond my expectations.

As has been pointed out, Kingdom Hearts was made for this thread. When I had first heard of it years ago, it hadn't even been named yet. It was just an article in an issue of EGM that said Squaresoft would be making an "RPG with Disney characters".

I grew up on Disney flicks so I thought, "Eh, it'll probably be decent at best with virtually no replay value, but I'll check it out purely for the sake of childhood nostalgia." But the closer it came to release, the more rave reviews I heard and I thought to myself, "It can't possibly be as good as they are saying it is!" When I finally played that sucker I couldn't wait for them to make a sequel! I wasn't even much of a Final Fantasy fan (the first I ever played was FF9, and that was well after FF10 had come out), but I fell in love with this game.

You might want to add KH2 to this list, not because anyone in their right mind would think it was gonna suck, but cuz' most of us probably didn't expect to be much better than the original. I've never been quite so happy to be wrong! :D

Metal Arms: A Glitch in the System

One of those game I bought used for cheap. Turned out to be a lot of fun with great visuals and gameplay.

I've mentioned it already a few times on these boards, and I'll gladly do it again since I just found my old PSone copy.

Jumping Flash.

The Premise? I never cared too much for the story, but long story short, It was a first person shooter where you were a robot bunny in a fantasyland who's weapons included fireworks.

And it kicked so much ass.

I'm serious.

Jumping Flash M@th*rf&%kers, Jumping Flash.

Twisted Metal: World Tour. I loved that game, played it day in day out with mates for ages, easily one of the best multiplayer games ever in my view.

And echoing the above statement. Jumping Flash. Weird concept brilliant game.

The Warriors.

Who'd have thought that you could make a really kick ass game based on a B-movie from 1979? Yeah, I thought they were nuts too.

However, Rockstar pulled it off. Warriors is an amazing game with some incredible beat 'em up and stealth gameplay. The feel of the game matches the movie perfectly and it also gives you the entire history of the Warriors.

Best of all, each Warrior is different. Some were good at mugging and bopping, while others were good at tagging and lock picking. My favorite boppers were Snow and Cleon. Snow was an absolute beast.

Kingdom Hearts
Red Dead Revolver
Mario Kart---While this may seem like an odd choice, understand I HATE Mario games with a passion, and when I heard that they were throwing him in a racing game I thought the acopolypse was coming. But when I played it, I fell in love with it, and remember many of night that me and the fellas would spend all night playing it and talking smack amongst each other.

Yu-Gi-Oh!: The Duelists of the Roses. I thought it'd be bad, since it was confusing at first. But I got addicted to the strategy. That, and the battle scenes.

Project Eden: bought it years ago for about a dollar (two for the price of one, the other one was Ubik who is the opposite of this thread), played it for 5 minutes on a friend's computer but didn't like it. Recently opened my drawer again and played it out of boredom and loved it this time. Interesting puzzles, no backtracking and no annoying jumping puzzles.

Jet Grind/Set Radio. I got it for around six bucks, and the first time I played it the slightly stiff controls and relatively low speed levels turned me away from it.

I recently put it on my DC to pacify a visiting cousin and ended up shoving him out the door and obsessing over it for the next seven hours.

Not only is the game fun as all heck, but it's pretty much the first game to use cell shading, and as a major Tales of Symphonia fan, I am quite indebted to it. It's still a bit slower than stuff like Tony Hawk, but there ain't no way you're getting all the tags without dying horribly if you go any faster. And heck, who doesn't want to tag store windows while grinding on a rail while holding a *massive* boombox on one shoulder and wearing a gigantic golden yen sign around your neck. The character designs for everyone are reason enough to play this game, even with slightly sticky controls.
