View Full Version : Anyone want to join in on a podcast?

I'm thinking about doing another one. Skype has improved a lot, we could actually do like a CBR comic book round up-type thing. I've got some experience from back when I was doing VideoGameRadio.com (and technically, I'm starting it up again). Anyone want to get on Skype, we can sort of demo it out?

Oh, and if you didn't now http://www.skype.com, awesome voice chat program. It's free, sounds like we're in the same room, and lets me record.

I'm down for it although with my computer on 56k the connection tends to fizzle out and have some bad lag. I'll probably just have to free up some resources before starting a convo.

Heck, I can get in the car and actually record the thing in the same room with you.

True. I actually have some equipment to do stuff like that, but I only have the one mic. I thought it might be interesting though if we could have a little fan forum from - potentially - around the world. Discuss what we read that week, what news looked interesting on Newsarama, you know, geek stuff. And I don't see any harm in cross-plugging stuff too much, as long as it doesn't get too out of hand.
I'm thinking Tuesday would be a good day to try and record a show. I figure, by Tuesday, everyone would be relatively spoiler-free. That and TV sucks on Tuesday. Timing will be interesting, since people live all over the place, but if you want in, put your name down, we'll figure something out.
Oh, and my Skype name is StoneGoldX. So if you see me online, holler.

It sounds cool, but at this point, I'm buying so few titles regularly, I doubt I'd be of any use to the show.
I'll definitely listen, though!

Honestly, I'm not sure it matters, as long as you read a couple, and can join in the general flow of conversation. I think Skype can handle something like six people in a chat at the same time, so if you need to fall back a bit, there are other people to pick up the slack. Assuming I can get enough people together to do this.

Can I pimp my blog?
Sure. As long as it doesn't get too out of hand, I figure there's room for everyone to plug their personal projects. Think of it like the old Politically Incorrect, but geekier.
can I be the rational european voice?
Sure, as long as you can figure out the international time differences to hook up at the right time. Since I figure the time difference is going to be the most difficult part in this whole project. But it would be great if we could have someone from another country in on this.

After re-reading the Skype guide, five people can be on a conference call at the same time. So basically, I need four people. And, if it turns out this works, it doesn't have to be the same four people every time. Rotating cast works fine. Might even work better.
And Fore, you can play, just download Skype and add StoneGoldX to your list. I figure that's the best way to figure out who is actually capable to do this.

All you need is a microphone. Really, the thing even works on dialup. Not that well, but it works.

Apparently if someone has a new Dual Core Intel setup you can have up to 10 people, but that would probably be too many people to do a show with.

I wouldn't mind giving an indie prospective from time to time. I would just have to buy a mic that works with my Mac.
Edit: I found one that works on both Mac and PC, and is only $30. (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/70902/wo/2k3WDSkumvul2ha0nuR1VdpbDVi/7.0.19.1.0.8.25.7.11.3.3)

I think 6 or 7 would be the most I'd want to deal with. And I actually have a new dual core, but I'm also going to be recording and "working the sound board." And yeah, I really do have those kind of capabilities. Not that I'd do this on a sample show, but if we had the server capabilities, we could actually Shoutcast the show live, still have it sound relatively professional, and then podcast it later.

Built-in mics, I'd want to try those out first, see how they sound. Which isn't hard. Again, just download Skype, (http://www.skype.com)add StoneGoldX to your call list and give me a holler. We'll see how it sounds.

You should have a 16-bit built-in microphone. From what I remember, it sounds pretty good.
I have a pretty decent studio mic, but I'd need to get some adapters to get it to work with my laptop's audio line-in. I don't know how my PowerBook's Built-in sounds. I should test it when I get home.

Mics are easy to pick up. It's helpful if it is unidirectional. That way, it doesn't pick up all the background noise in the room.

Sure. Hell, if you have headphones, you can still kind of, sort of use it. You can plug headphones into your mic jack and use them as really crappy headphones. Really crappy though.

StoneGold
02-13-2006, 02:37 PM
Since we'll have at least one guy who was actually at Wondercon, I figure discussing the news that was released there would be a good idea. So... stuff like PAD is exclusive at Marvel, Tim Truman is the new Conan writer, Morrison on Batman, any indie news Brandon happened to pick up on, stuff like that. That and a roundtable of whatever you're reading right now. If there's anything specific you want to discuss, tell me. I'm not worried about there not being enough show though, I've talked to a couple of you one on one for a good while. With a mess of us in the chat room, it should be easy like pie.

As for a participation list, so far on my Skype list I've got Will S, Tricksterpup, Tadhg, Smell, Dan, Brandon, and Wane. Dom is probably out due to being in another country, sadly. But that should be more than enough to do a show.
