I got a preview DVD with the first two episodes of it a while back and it looked pretty good so I decided to buy the first DVD.

Has anyone else seen this and if so what do you think of it?

Well, there's a lot more added, and a bit of filler to the story, but then, that's what happens when you turn a three hour movie into a 26 episode series.

By and large, I like it.

Essentially its about a small farm village who has their rice crops, women, etc. taken by bandits. The village sends three of the villagers to search for samurai who are willing to defend the village for shelter and food.

Ever see the Kurosawa movie The Seven Samurai? It's that. But four times as long. And with more giant robots and explosions.*

Seriously, plot points, character names, character roles, even dialogue is pretty much what it was in the movie. So, if you havn't seen it, I recommend choosing one to see first, because it will have some psoilers for the other. Though, really, I remember Kambei being a lot more jolly in the movie. At least less somber.

Anyway, if you havn't seen Seven Samurai, there's a bout 127 different movies based on either it, or it's most famous remake, The Magnificent Seven. Seriously, Battle Beyond the Stars, Bug's Life, Three Amigos, an Episode of DS9, and that's just off the top of my head.

*Ah, Anime, is there anything you won't add giant robots and explosions to? Personally, I'm waiting for the giant combing robot version of Tale of Two Cities.

I've seen some of it, and I actually thought it was pretty boring.

I heard something about it coming out on Turner Classic Movies sometime this year but I dont remember when.
I'll look around as see what I can find.

EDIT:
I found this...
Its gonna be on IFC
According to Wizard's Anime Insider, Samurai 7 (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=3127) will debut on two channels in March 2006. It will debut on March 1 on VOOM's Animania and later in March on IFC as a part of the channel's "Samurai Saturdays ("")" block, a block featuring Asian martial-arts films and series

Now that the box set is out I have to know if this is good. I got burned on Samurai Deeper Kyo so I'm doing my research first before buying the box set.

I didn't enjoy it.

Well I downloaded it so I couldn't complain. But this was before it got licensed.

I could only watch up to episode 14 before I quit.

The robots that the samurai fought looked like flying furnaces. And the big strategy that the samurai employed was to build a giant crossbow the size of a building and the peasants built it in like a month. Maybe if the peasants actually spent time working the field they could pay off those taxes.

In Canada it came out on one of our paid channels.

Having seen it all now I'll say this: I enjoyed the first half or so of the series. Which is pretty close to the movie. The last half... not so much.

I loved every moment (I watched it all) and there were some great moments like the death of jubei among others. But totally agree that some of samurai looked like garbage cans. LOL

I watched the first episode and then lost interest. I dunno, I just didn't like it for some reason.

Might have been the post-apocalyptic setting, though. I generally dislike post-apocalyptic stories.

Wow. With people either loving it or hating it I have no idea how to proceed. I think I'll just wait until the price comes down some before I make any commitments to purchase Samurai 7.

I rented it from Netflix and watched it all. Don't know if I would actully buy the set, but then again I don't buy alot of them anyway. I thought it was a pretty good show. It did have some slow points in it but overall it was enjoyable.

I'm a huge Kurosawa fan and have been wondering about this one, myself. I own Criterion's Seven Samurai... and, based on what I've read here, I think I'll pass on this series. Seven Samurai is a classic that still towers above modern film-making. Maybe I'll rent one to be sure?

I loved the series - excellent animation - good story with intertwining sub plots, well defined characters.

I nice twist on an old school tale.

Is there sword fights, blood and gratuitous violence? What can I say, I like that kind of thing.
