Once I'd get past a nifty Joe Kubert cover, I always liked to see the art of Frank Redondo in the pages of SGT. ROCK.

Can anyone tell me more about this artist, and/or other books I can look for that featured his art?

I remember a DC artist named Nestor Redondo.

Same guy?

Nestor took over the art chores on the original Swamp Thing when Bernie Wrightson left.

Nestor Redondo... hmm. Don't believe it's him, but could be wrong...

I always assumed that Nestor and Frank were brothers. I'm pretty sure I've also seen art credited to "The Redondo Studio."

I also remember a Direct Currents blurb in a 70s DC listing a backup (probably war) story would be illustraed by "one of our talented Filipino artists," but no name.

From the Unofficial Handbook of Marvel Comics Creators, I got these credits, which add at least one more Redondo, if not two.

I believe Nestor, Frank and Virgilio are/were all brothers. Perhaps someone could consult CBA vol. 2 #4 to check this. I don't know if Jesus is any relation; it seems like he must be much younger than the other three.

I'm not sure, but you might be able to find additional info at The Philippine Comics Art Museum:
http://www.komikero.com/museum/index.html

There's tons of info, and beautiful artwork, on that site.

Thanks for the responses! This makes it all the more interesting, I have to admit.

And Ron, I'll have to give that link a glance. Thanks!

I had a chance to research the Redondo question that began this thread. The first thing I did was take Sir Tim's advice and dig out CBA September 2004, the issue that highlighted Filipino artists.

Frank Redondo, Sgt. Rock illustrator extraordinaire, is the same person as Francisco Redondo. Here's the entire entry from the CBA article:

Francisco/Frank Redondo
The multi-named Frank Redondo (brother of Nestor, who also had the pen names Fred and Quico) was a good, solid, artist who became one of DC's mainstays from the mid-'70s to the mid-'80s, primarily though his lengthy tenure on Sgt. Rock. A dependable, rather than thrilling draftsman, he drew over 50 horror strips for DC and a few Pendulum Press Classic adaptations, before taking over the Sgt. Rock strip from Russ Heath. On Rock, with the help of Joe Kubert layouts, Redondo's art loosened up considerably, and with grittier inking it really came to life. Between 1976 and '85, he drew 82 Rock episodes but, when the title was cancelled, his U.S. comic work appears to have come to an end. As Fred Redondo, he drew one strip for Warren's Eerie #116.

*Note that "Fred Redondo" was used by both Frank and Nestor as a pen name. Virgilio Redondo is the third and eldest of the three Redondo brothers. His work included Marvel's Giant-Sized Dracula #5, Giant-Sized Werewolf #4, and 11 strips for their b&w books.

*The Redondo Studio has its own entry in the CBA article ("Philippine Comic Books Artists in U. S. Comics," by David A. Roach):

Redondo Studio
The precise composition of the Redondo Studio has never been revealed, though it is known to consist of associates of Nestor Redondo. The Studio worked on several DC strips in the mid-'70s, including Ragman #1-4, Tarzan #242, 244-248, 250, the unpublished Sextet book, and several horror strips. I suspect that the studio also produced the Book and Record series of the Apes movies adaptations. Possible Studio members include: Noly Zamora, Vicatan, Federico Javinal, Nes Bernardo, Auring Sanches, Hal and Ernie Santiago, Rading Mina Sabater, Al Cabral, Tony Caravana, Marcelo Adolfo, Emer Tablason, Nestor Leonidez, and Zenon Men Nunag.

*The Brothers Redondo:
Virgilio Redondo (? - ?)
Nestor Redondo (1928-1995)
Francisco Redondo (? - ?)

*Jesus Redondo is a Spanish artist (the other Redondos are from the Philippines). Information about Jesus (b. 1934) can be found here http://www.lambiek.net/artists/r/redondo_jesus.htm
