It's a good bet sales will be the determining factor in how long Busiek stays on the book. That being said, with the movie coming out this year and Kurt's writing chops, he'll probably be on the book as long as he wants.

Kurt seems to have an excellent understanding of the Superman mythos. I was really excited by the announcement of the Busiek/Pacheco team, and this interview makes me anticipate this series even more.
Let's hope Kurt is in for the long haul.

Didn't Maxima die during "Our World's at War"?
Have to say I'm really intrigued by "an idea for what sounded like the coolest Superman story that should have happened in the Sixties but never did ". So just when can I read THAT? :)

Didn't Maxima die during "Our World's at War"?
Yeah, but it was one of those "off-screen" deaths, if I remember right. We saw the ship she was in blow up, but it was an outside point of view, and you know the usual "no body, no confirmed death." could apply here (although even that rule isn't always true, look at Colossus).
Still, I always had a soft spot for her (both as a hero and a villian), so if she's back, I'm happy.

Didn't Maxima use a robot in her first appearance? whose to say that she didn't use one in this case? Either that or Brainiac has her locked up somewhere.

Kurt can ask Jeph or somebody about this if he wants. I may be imagining things but I *think* the implication buried there was that the 12 year-old Japanese Toyman was the grandson of Metalo, Metallo's predecessor.
I hope Vartox makes a return engagement. He hasn't shown up since Jurgens reintroduced him and I always had some fun Mongul-Maxima-Vartox stories I wanted to see.
On that note...
I'd really like to see a groupshot/crossover using the Superman "supporting heroes". I don't think anybody's ever thrown them together except Alan Moore in a few stray panels.
I'd love to see Vartox, Maxima, Shadowdragon, Gangbuster, Alpha Centurion, Outburst, Twilight, Superboy, Steel, Supergirl, Krypto, Hyperman, Kristen Welles Superwoman -- The whole lot of 'em. Anybody who's ever been a super-hero and a supporting cast member in a Superman comic.
That would be an amazing groupshot and I think that it would resonate with Superman fans of all eras to see them all together.

What the hell happened to Alpha Centurion, anyway? Haven't seen him since he was flirting with Lois.
I've noticed that there has been no mention of Lois Lane in any of recent interviews, solicits or on any covers. I'm starting to get nervous because i'm actually a fan of the married Superman, and I had some high hopes that Kurt would be writing her - especially after the great handling of the Lois/Clark relationship in Secret Identity.

Yes, 2008.
I wanted to say something about this (yes, even though it was on page 1 of now 3). Is it really so shocking that one author could be the writer on a comic for over 24 issues (that being how many to go from 2006 to 2008)? I mean we've had runs much longer than that on Robin, Superboy, Impulse, Young Justice, Supergirl (PAD's version), Birds of Prey (both Dixon and Simone IIRC), and those are just the ones I can name off the top of my head within the DCU itself. Really, I think it's a sad state of affairs when the idea of one author on a series for more than two years is astonishing.
Well, Dan DiDio has been rotating the creative teams every 12 issues on all Superman books. And, as far as I know, that's still his plan. So I was also a little surprised to hear of the possibility of more than twelve Superman issues from Kurt.

Anything about Brainiac? I'm partial to the green with studs on the head version.
I'm showing my age with this one but what about the Composite Superman. First villain I ever say back in the 70's.
If you can make Superman fun to read then I'll be happy regardless of what you do. I dropped the titles in 2001 after years of reading out of habit. Love to read my favorite character again. Thanks Mr. Busiek!

I have plans for that cheery fellow we call 'Ac, but they're a ways in the future.
I'm showing my age with this one but what about the Composite Superman.
On the other hand...
He's half Batman. Half Superman. But just visually.
Doe he have Batman's skill and Superman's might? Batman's brains and Superman's brawn? Batman's money and Superman's chick?
Does he flip a coin, and if it comes up bat-side up, he strikes fear in the hearts of criminals, S-side up, he changes the course of mighty rivers?
Is he, perhaps, the creation of Mr. Mxyzptlk and Bat-Mite?
No. He has all the powers of the Legion of Superheroes.
From when lightning hit his collection of statuettes.
His name, his costume -- aside from being clunky and ugly, have nothing to do with what he actually doed.
My God, Hammerhead, Thunderboot and Piledriver, the Triumvirate of Terror, are better ideas than this. And they can't say that about much.
I'm holding out for the Composite Batman, who looks like Jimmy Olsen on top, Robin from the waist down, and has all the powers of the All-Star Squadron, gifted to him by the ghosts of FDR and Fala.
If you can make Superman fun to read then I'll be happy regardless of what you do.

What Lex said.
Given the fact that ever since the departure of Kelly, Casey and Loeb (and Schultz, for that matter), there hasn't been a single creative team that has stayed for more than 12 issues (except for Rucka, but even in his case, DC changed the art team), I'd say that yes, it is kinda surprising.

Since Schultz predates Berganza's editorial tenure and outlasted Loeb, he MAY have been the most prolific Superman writer of the last decade.

A new role for Lana Lang. New realms to conquer for a certain bald-headed master criminal. Jimmy Olsen's Blues. Pete Ross's post-White House career. Brainiac.
Yay!
Pericles Hazard. Camelot Falls. Paragon. The Envoy. Amalak. Khyber. Omni-fi. Subjekt-17.
Huh?
Krypto. The problem of Smallville. When he was a boy. Superman's true home.

KB: There'll be fat lips and black eyes, carnage and fateful choices, firepower enough to shatter a world. There'll be danger in the skies and panic in the streets. There'll be quiet time for Clark and Lois, happy time for Perry White, media glare for Lex Luthor, and Jimmy Olsen gets to kick a rock.

Personally, I think Lois is a fun character but as Gail Simone commented, she can tend to dominate.
Thing is, I think there are stories that work well from Lois' perspective or with Lois being involved --- but that those shouldn't get in the way of stories with little or no Lois.
I think the ideal situation would be for her to get her own title again.

Avengers Forever was one of the last Marvel books I bought before dropping comics in 2001. I loved how it incorporated so much of the history that I remembered and loved. That's the problem with Superman having so many different histories. (An asided to this, a friend of mine who loves Smallville but doesn't know alot about Superman asks me questions like "Can he fly in space?" or "How fast can he fly?" My response is usually something like, "Well.....he used to be nearly as fast as the Flash but not anymore. Don't ask me to explain!")

Dear Kurt Busiek,
I have a couple questions for you:
1) Will any future Superman stories be influenced by the upcoming movie, 'Superman Returns'?
2) What will become of the Lois/Clark relationship after the one year jump?
3) Will will become of Connor Kent (aka Superboy)?
I am asking, because all three questions have been on my mind for sometime. I hope that Lois and Clark will stay together, and Conner will finally step up and prove himself worthy of being a true possible successor to Superman. I still think that Connor has A LOT of potential as a character and I think it would be a HUGE travisty from a writing standpoint and a character standpoint, if anything happens to him. Besides, I think that Superman needs a true successor, someone he can actually count on to take over things in the event that he had to leave Earth for a while, has to retire, or God forbid, Superman actually dies. I also think it would be a huge travisty if Lois and Clark broke up. I mean, those two belong together and Clark pretty much needs Lois more than ever, especially with what's been going down for the past year or so (him being on the outs with his now former JLA teammates, the rest of the world beginning to turn on him, etc., etc.).
I like Supergirl but I don't think she would be up to being a successor since she seems to want to get as far away from the Superman stuff as possible and be her own person. I think that Superboy would be FAR more appreciative of being the next in line to possibly assume the Superman mantle than Kara/Supergirl ever would.
I think that Superman needs other people he can count on, which is why I hope that Connor finally steps up and starts to become more of a hero.

Thanks for the answers, Kurt.
I hope they stay married. After everything that's gone down, from Superman losing his most trusted friends and allies, to his name being thrown in the mud by what his now former JLA teammates did in Identity Crisis as well as the whole fiasco with max lord (thought it was Diana who crossed the line there, not Clark), I think needs Lois in his life more than ever. As its been shown in the past, without Lois Lane, you really can't have a Superman. I think Superman needs her to keep him grounded, and keep him sane, after everything that's happened in the past year or so.
I also hope that Connor sticks around. Again, I think this guy has a lot of storyline potential, and definately has FAR more storyline potential than Kara does, for several reasons. I think there's still a lot of story left to be told with him, and there's room for development. I definately think that its time for him to step up and become more of a hero, and make himself more worthy of being in the 'Superman' family. Besides, Superman needs more people that he can count on, which is why I hope that Kara and Connor both step up and start acting like heros.

True.
But don't hold your breath for Kara, though. She's just a rebel teenager "trying to find her place in the universe", or something like that.

Hey Kurt, I have a couple more questions for you:
1) Will the big three (Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman) ever be friends, again?
2) How will the events of Infinite Crisis and '52' affect Superman/Batman, which is one of the ongoing series?

I wanna play, too.
1) Will Superman move planets and ignite stars with his Heat Vision again? I mean, will Superman be the STRONGEST there is again?
2) Will we ever know anything about Rao?
3) Will he use his powers properly (that is, not forgetting about his Super-speed or Freezing Breath)?
4) Will he be portrayed as the scientist and GOD he is?
5) Will Waid's Krypton history be addressed? BTW, BIRTHRIGHT ROCKS. Please tell that to Mark if you ever see him.
6) Will we see Superman kicking Batman's butt? :D
Thanx in advance, and sorry for any inconvenients.

That'd be up to the people who work on that book to tell you -- or not, if they'd rather have you find out by reading the book.

Every single one of these questions is asking what'll happen in the future, so it's all "Wait and see" stuff.
Some of it'll be addressed, some I don't know of any plans for, but you never know.

Another title of yours I'll definitely be buying, Kurt! Sounds great!
I noticed Paragon in that list... are you finally bringing back the guy that had 1 fight against the JLA so long ago? I've always liked him and wished he'd return, but after all this time, I'd given up hope! And the Galatic Golem too! Woohoo!

That's him. I can't venture into a DC assignment without people asking to see him again. That, and I finally got ideas for what to do with him...

What about the Kents?
They bought the General Store downtown and... after awhile... we stopped seeing it. Then Birthright hit and their depictions fluctuated even more wildly than usual until, finally, they started getting little or no paneltime.
Now, I prefer the origin where they died before Clark became Superman and seeing Superman constantly go home to Ma and Pa does weird things to his heroic dynamic.... But there have been several times over the last year or two where BIG things happened and we never got so much as a glimpse of them.
Any chance for revelation/resolution/examination of what's going on with the Smallville crew?
Much as I prefer them dead in the origin, there's something that just draws me in whenever Superman visits Smallville.

Well, at least I tried.
I hope I gave you and Action Comics' writer an idea (the Rao thingy), because I've been wanting to know that for years now. Well, not really an idea, but rather a reminder of a very old loose end.

Or at least, stories in which they appear? Yes.

Is there a possibility for a Cary Nord cover?
Any plans for Silver Banshee?
Any old-school, uh, Superdickery afoot?
Approximately how old will Jimmy Olsen be in your version?
Will we get to see the myriad types and hues of Kryptonite?
Any plans for the Supermobile?

I would flip for a good old-fashioned cover of Superman murdering Lois. :)
"Superman! Don't throw me into the sun!"
"Sorry, Lois...you've annoyed me for the last time!"

I don't think so. I think it would be poor manners to raid the Conan art team, even if only for a page.
Any plans for Silver Banshee?
She's on one of the upcoming covers, at least.
Any old-school, uh, Superdickery afoot?
Didn't I cover that in ASTRO CITY: LOCAL HEROES #4?
Approximately how old will Jimmy Olsen be in your version?
Young enough to be a young guy, old enough to be a young adult.
Will we get to see the myriad types and hues of Kryptonite?
Only time will tell.
Any plans for the Supermobile?
I love the Supermobile. But I expect if we did anything like that today, we'd take a different approach. It hasn't aged all that well.

Neither has my little old Corgi die-cast toy of said Supermobile, either.
