This issue has a lot of stuff.

It's good the fin head back but instead of starting fresh Larsen opted just to keep the story going from where he left nearly a year ago. Which isn't a bad idea but it just got a little confusing until I dug up issue 121. Especially with the splash page Iraqi robot shots, the old school Superpatriot pages (a definate highlight) in addition to the Dragon as President and is Mr. Glum evil subplots. It's a lot to take in at once especially when the book has been gone for so long. I'd hate to be a new reader.

But overall I like the direction the book is heading. Jennifer taking Dragon to task for his rather passive behavior of late, Mr. Glum becoming a darker character, Superpatriot recognizing he's past his prime, figure and Ronald Urass quite possibly becoming a villan. So I'm definately anxious to see how this plays out.

But the best news is Dragon is back and hopefully coming back to a regular schedule.

I just started back into collecting comics this May and had not seen any new Dragon comics. I figured it was gone... I used to read The Savage Dragon back when it started and it was my favorite book at the time... I also used to read Larsen's Spidey. Anyway, I was pleased to see it is still around - but I haven't got any idea what's going on. When I stopped reading Rapture had asked him to marry her and she was pregnant I think. Anyone want to give a quick summary of where the story is right now?

I got Savage Dragon 122 today and I gotta be honest: I thought the issue was so-so. Maybe I'm just not in the Dragon mood today or something, but this issue really didn't grab me. Sure, the Superpatriot pages were kind of neat, but kindly oddly placed too. I actually would have liked to have seen the Superpatriot pages in the back of the book, instead of breaking up the main story (I think thats another reason the main story didn't grab me, because there kept being interuptions in the story). Actually, I think a retro Superpatriot story would have been cooler then the back-up in the back of this issue. The back-up was even more so-so then the main story.

Not saying I hated the issue, some of it was interesting, but overall, it just fell flat. Maybe I was expecting too much after the long wait. I don't know.

I'm definitly going to re-read the issue again. Especially after I re-read some of the past issues again.

I like Dragon alot and I am looking forward to more issues. I just hope they are more exciting then this one.

" Of course, I just got done reading GL: Rebirth, which was awesome, and Ultimate Spiderman, which was really good, so maybe I just wasn't in the Dragon mood."

Dude almost 100 issues went by.

Sigh...

Dragon lives in an alternate reality now and is married and has an adopted daughter. There's also a little alien called Mr. Glum who cause all sorts of trouble.

Good god, what didn't happen since then?

What was that...issue 27? That was nearly a hundred issues ago.

Recapping would take forever, But the Savage Dragon cover gallery has a bunch of blurbs on the issues, so you might use that to catch up. (http://www.savagedragon.com/)

Also nab a copy of The Savage Dragon Companion (http://www.midtowncomics.com/eshop/pop_product.asp?sKey=savage+dragon+companion&crypt=HPcog?(NPcog?(WugtKF?539:;2955(WutPcog?(WutV {rg?(WutNgxgn?&ADV=2&SearchCat=&CT_PARID=61&PRID=4093&CGID=74&mysearch=yes&Page=&Ref=Search&InCart=0) It recaps the first 100 issues.

There are also Trade Paper Backs, Vol.1-10 reprint up to issue #52 and Vol.15 which kicks off the title's current dirrection reprinting issues #76 - 81

After reading the origin story in the Image Hardcover, I went back and re-read the entire run, finsihed just as 122 hit the stands.

I liked it a lot (both the entire series and this issue) but yeah, something about this latest one was a bit off.

After re-reading just the last issue today, I think it was the transitions. Jumping to and from the old school style superpatriot (which I LOVED) didn't flow as smoothly as it could have. One thing that might have helped was to place the fake snack ad in the story to help give a place to switch styles. (and it would have made the note "story continues after next page" work better...)

In fact the one thing I think Erik needs to work on is his transitions, through out the entire series, I felt that sometimes his jumping from time and place didn't quite work. Maybe even if he started using as small "meanwhile" caption. (That said, I get the feeling he doesn't because he doesn't want to talk down to us readers...and he's right to a degree, I always figured out what I needed to know)

Anyway, it was a solid issue despite my griping, and I look forward to the next issue.

This was my first issue back after being away for about 100 issues.I really liked the story in the Image HC and thought this was a bit of a let down but I will give it a few more issues before I decide to keep going or not.

NOOOO!!Don't spoil it here!!!! Start another thread with a spoiler title. Actually, don't even do that, because then other people won't go out and buy it. If you want to know the story cough up the dough. Or read it at the public library, most carry comics these days.

and Dave Cote, stick around. If things are going to be like anything they have been in the recent past I'm sure you will enjoy it.

I could, but I won't. In fact, even after I bought it, I debated reading it. You don't need to read it in anyway to understand the comic and I always kinda liked the fact that no one knew.

So I agree with Alex, I am not telling anyone.
I appreciate you wanting to know, but considering I paid for the hardcover ONLY for this story (and I am not swimming in cash, so getting it was a big deal) I kinda feel that my reward is knowing some stuff most others don't.

Plus Erik commented (in the book) that he didn't even want to write the story, he only did it because it wanted the story to be worth the Hardcover price. And it was. Like Image #0, where Erik made the story worth the effort you had to go through to get it....I have the highest respect for that..cause he clearly respects me (The reader "me", he doesn't know me from Adam)

So, no spoilers from me, sorry.

This is my debate right now. My comic store guy ordered it for me, but now I'm not so sure I want to know now.

Read it, it's good. And because it isn't nessisary reading for the series, it doesn't change anything if you read it or not. Except that you get an awesome little one off story. The fact that it involves Dragon is quite erelevent

I'm right with you. I'm going to chaulk it up to the delay between issues, the difficulty of trying to jam 3~5 different plot lines into a 22 page book, Erik's efforts to color and letter the thing himself, too much zipatone and the art. I know that it's a bad cliche to have to fall into the "his old art was better" fanboy rant, but it's hard not to bring up the argument this time around. The art (while still about a billion times better than anything that I can put down on paper) was not too my liking. Was Erik experimenting with a new art style? Some of those pages barely look finished - was he going for a Bill Sienkiewicz look? I think this is what detracted from my overall enjoyment of the book.

That being said, I've been a loyal reader since the first mini-series and will continue to read as long as Erik is willing to produce the book. I'm just hoping that the art will improve as Erik gets back into the swing of things.

Maybe its the way he holds his pencil.
