View Full Version : Male Verion of Female Heroes/Villains

Are there any male version of female heroes/villains? There are numerous female versions of male heroes. Several come to mind: Supergirl, Batgirl, Mary Marvel, Aquagirl, Speedy [female] and Jesse Quick. List any others that you can think of. So, when are we going to see Wonder Man [DC] or Hunter [male Huntress]? OK, Hunter may be a stretch since Huntress is not really that prominent of a figure but you get my meaning. Who else would make a good male analog of a female hero/villain?

Sorry for posting this in the DC and Marvel forums, but it should be interesting to see what type of responses are received for both universes.

There was a Wonder Warrior:

There was a male Cheetah in the Wonder Woman book for a time.

It doesn't happen very often. Probably because of the "subordinate" position women have in our culture. A woman wearing a man's costume is just aligning herself with the dominant male figure, as is expected of her.

Whereas a man dressing up in a woman's costume would be aligning himself in a subordinate position.

To put it another way, a woman wearing men's clothes is "hot", while a man in women's clothes is "weird" or "gay".

Now the standard disclaimers, before the pile-on begins:

a. I'm not saying this describes the viewpoints of every single man and woman. I'm simply describing a societal/cultural trend.

b. I'm not saying this is the right way for things to be. I'm just describing the way things are.

c. I'm not saying it's always going to be this way. It could change in the future.

d. This is just my opinion, I could be wrong.

There, I think I've covered them all. I'm sure someone will let me know if I haven't...

How about Catman?

I think you're reading far too deeply into it. Although, yes, a man dressed like wonder woman would look pretty gay

I imagine that the big reason that there aren't male versions of women heroes, is that there aren't enough popular women heroes to do that.

there is a batgirl because batman is hugely popular, there is a supergirl for the same reason, there is even a ms marvel for the exact same reason. But with the women heroes, Wonder Woman has a hard enough time keeping her comic popular, so there isn't the need to cash in on the characters popularity.

catman is about the only one that comes to mind that is the opposite. But as a rule, male characters in comics have sustained popularity, something that few, if any female characters ever have.

I always thought they should've given WW a male sidekick named Golden Eagle.

Uh...yeah. I know.

Point being, up until very recently, the name was wide open for a new character.

There's Wonder Woman's enemy Captain Wonder:

BTW, Captain Wonder had another costume that looked just like Wonder Woman's. Bare legs and a strapless top.

It used to be a running gag on the DC message Boards...

I think glennsim is pretty much spot on. Furthermore, given the double-standards when it comes to superhero costumes, female characters will generally look okay in any costume worn by a male hero, while the reverse simply isn't true (male heroes are designed to look strong, female heroes to look sexy).

And anyway, most female characters are offshoots of a male character to begin with. Wonder Woman is the only woman to have her own "family" of characters, and they're all women (although Phil Jimenez did introduce a non-powered Wonder Boy in the last issue of his run).

I dunno. A guy would look fine in a version of most of Donna Troy's outfits. Just needs a little tweak here or there.

You think? I can't imagine a guy wearing her original Wonder Girl suit, the red one, god forbid the Perez Troia abomination, or her Jimenez sparkly deal without some serious tweaking.

Well, actually I guess I could see a guy wearing the outfit she had on while she got shot in Graduation Day if only the boots were changed and the huge disco necklace gotten rid of.

Raise the neckline of the red and it wouldn't be bad at all, I don't think.

Well, the best answer to this is probably Cat-Man, Catwoman was first, is more popular, and they're from the same company and even both fight Batman.

I was going to say Zatara from Kingdom Come who was the successor of Zatanna, until I remembered that Zatanna was just following in the footsteps of her father Zatara, who is of course the original.

I have an idea.

Anyone remember when the Authority traveled to an alternate earth where the genders were all swapped? For example, their earth had a male Statue Of Liberty. An anatomically correct Statue.

I was wondering what the DCU equivalent of that kind of Earth would be. I challenged myself to come up with a few gender reversals of heroes/heroines we know.

I present Power Boy. The joke is that he'd be drawn mainly from the waist up. He's brash, candid, and isn't afraid of using his fists to solve problems.

Anyone have any other ideas?

I guess you're right, actually. That wouldn't look too bad. Of course, what would that make him? Wonder Girl Boy ? :D

I think glennsim and Capt USA pretty much hit the nail on the head. Perhaps if we could get together a list of female super heros that are extensions of already existing male heros we could start coming up with male spin offsa or something. Though one thing I was thinking about is that alot of female character's kinda depend on their being female as part of thier hook. Take Poison Ivy for example, Poison Ivan :D just doesn't have the same ring to it.
