Who is this guy? How far does he go back? What did Jim C do to him or was that not true? I was one of those who was sure the batsymbol on the Spectre was misdirection, but I was completely wrong about who it was going to be. I didn't even know this character existed.

He's from Gotham Central - a batbook that focuses on the police dept in Gotham. He was one of the main characters and was recently killed by Jim Corrigan (also on the dept) because he was planning to expose his corrupt activities and try to get him fired. He died really recently.

It's too bad that book is ending. If you have not read them, you should really pick up some of the TPBs. Great Stories.

The cop whose the new host for the specter is Rene Montoya's former partner (before he died), and he was a big character in Gotham Central.

For those that haven't read Gotham Central, there's not much to know about him that affects the Infinite Crisis plot.......

....yet.

It is, but his previous history probably isn't necessary to follow IC, and I'm sure it will be explained in any future Spectre series. It's not like Hal Jordan being a household name made him a better Spectre, after all.

Funny thing is, this is an inversion of DC's first stab at an African-American superhero--The Black Bomber (before Tony Isabella got them to change their minds and publish his Black Lightning instead) was a white man who transformed into a black superhero...now we have a black man who (presumably) will change into a (literally) white superhero!

For that matter, Allen wasn't just from GOTHAM CENTRAL, either. He made his debut in the Bat-books at least a couple of years before GOTHAM CENTRAL came out.

I found that reading Gotham Central #38 explained everything (I've never read any other Gotham Central issues). It was still on the new releases shelf at my LCS this week. You could probably find one just as easily.
