so now that the first arc is behind us, i was just thinking about the future of FNSM. particularly about how long a future PAD and yourself are going to stay on the book. i've enjoyed it a lot so far, so the longer the better i say. you guys launched it, so i'd love to see a good long run from you guys. your art compliments his writing so well that i can already tell this book will most likely be the most consistantly great Spidey book. so how far ahead have you guys planned to go so far?

I can't speak for Peter.... but he's not really known for short runs on titles. If you look at the books he's worked on, he has usually stuck with it for either the length of the title, in cases like YOUNG JUSTICE and SUPERGIRL, or for years and years until editorial decides to make a change like he did with HULK. So I don't think you have much to worry about on his account-- and I know from reading interviews with him that he loves the character of SPIDER-MAN.

As for me... I don't know. I tend to get bored easily. My work on FANTASTIC FOUR was the longest run I've ever put in on any title I've worked on. And that was mainly because I enjoyed working with Mark Waid so much and was determined to stick with him 'til the end-- since I'd left FLASH (which Mark was writing) after only one year when I first broke into the biz and ended up regretting that decision because the stories he wrote after I left were so cool. And I'm very glad I stayed on FF. I guess only time and the kinds of stories I get to draw in the near future will determine how long I stay on FRIENDLY.

Sorry I couldn't give you a concrete answer......

Yea, I dunno.

Just judging from that great interview Mike did on Wordballoon with John Siuntres, it seemed almost as if he wasn't too thrilled with the current The Other stuff since it's a darker type of story and more shadow heavy than he's used to which is kind of a shame because I think it looks really good even if he isn't comfortable with it. Hope you don't get bored anytime soon Mike (or at least stick with it for a year's worth of stories post The Other).

I guess that would be another a good question for you Mike. Were you more enthusiatic to work with Mark until he unexpectedly bowed out and was replaced with Peter David? And were you pleasantly surprised to work with Peter and decided to stay and work with him?

I'm definitely looking forward to seeing you continue to work with David and see the stories work on their own post The Other.

I was very excited at the idea of working with Mark on a SPIDER-MAN title. I just KNEW he was going to do some great stuff. It was pretty heartbreaking that he had to pull out of the book. It's been nice drawing Peter's scripts.... but I can't help but wonder what kind of stuff Mark would have come up with.

same here. i was really excited about a Waid written spidey. that said, i'm a huge fan of Peter's and when i heard he was taking over it healed all wounds created from the news i wasn't getting a run from Waid. the curiosity won't ever disappear though, it definately would have been a great run.

you gotta stay on for as long as you can though. your sensational run was fantastic. that's one of my favorite comic runs of all time. i'm looking forward to some of that same magic.

Yo Wieringo!

I just saw a preview of Issue 7 that said Roger Cruz was doin the interiors. Is that just because you needed a break for an issue, or will you be moving on after that?

Either way I should be on board for whatever you do. I told my comic shop owner dude to just put anything you draw in my box after I read issue 3 of this series. You should feel priveledged because I've never made such a request before. Anyway, keep up the good work. Between Spiderman and the FF I have been really impressed lately. You rock!

Okay, just this once. ;)

Hey, boss-- I'm being skipped forward to issue #8. The entire crossover was running pretty far behind, production-wise... and I'm just finishing up issue #5 -- so they're trying to give me some more lead time so I can get another block of issues in an arc or two done. I'm not a monthly artist, to be honest. I can get 4-6 issues in a row done before having to have some help in keeping whatever title I'm working for on schedule.

And believe me-- I feel very honored that you asked your shop owner to pull whatever I work on for you. It's very, very gratifying to have your trust like that.

Thank you!
:)

I'm glad to hear that you'll be staying on Spidey for a while longer Mr. Wieringo. And its cool with me that you're taking an issue or two off now and then. I like Roger Cruz anyway. Also, I can't believe anybody can draw a monthly Spidey title to be honest. Those webs on his costume have got to be a complete pain in the ass. Hopefully this new costume will make things easier for you. Who designed that by the way? Was that you? Are you and David going to use it? Anyway its late and I'm rambling, so in closing, thanks for responding, and you rock

Mike Wieringo

I'm not quite sure who designed it, boss...... I think it was either Chris Bachalo or Joe Quesada. And yeah-- we'll be using it in the FRIENDLY title.

But as for the webs on the classic costume-- after a while, it becomes second nature. That's not what takes me so long-- it's doing the layout and storytelling.

cool, and thanks for the quick response.

Completely off the topic, but I just clicked on the link to your homepage and there are some great drawings on there. I'm working on an oil painting right now and I was wondering if you ever worked in this medium. I think it'd be really cool to see some paintings of yours if they are out there on any sites. I could use the inspiration.

I was an absolute disaster with oil paints in college. Watercolor was my medium.

I've got a lot of nude figure studies that I did in watercolor in college... but they're too big to scan (and I've got a 12x17 inch scanner...!) so I can't really show you anything. But no... oils are way beyond my ability to contol.

Yeah I suck at watercolors myself. I'm not so great at oils either, but I just took some classes in college mainly so I could paint those nudes you mentioned. Anyway it was worth a try, I'm sure they're not the disaster you made them out to be. Keep up the awesome work and have a great weekend.

Hey Mike!

First of all, I think it is really cool to have this message board, I just discovered it, but I am really impressed by your willingness to share your ideas and listen to ours. It's a very classy thing you do here! So thanks for this opportunity to converse with one of my favorite creators in all of comics! lol!

As a fledging artist myself, I have to ask you a question out of sheer curiosity...

Is there any reason you no longer draw the webs under Spidey's arms? Some artists do, some don't, I seem to remember that you did during your run on Sensational!

Just Curious! lol! Your work is FANTASTIC regardless!!!!!

Keep up the great work!!!!!! ;)

Well, thanks for stopping in to participate!

I don't know for sure why I haven't been drawing the under-arm webs on FRIENDLY. Probably just because I've been forgetting to do so. I think you'll be happy to see them return in issue #5 due out March 1. I hope you'll stop by to let me know what you think about the issue when you've read it.... :)

Vulture is a busy guy, he was in Sensational Spider-man #23, too!
(though i think in FNSM, it is a memory of one of the vulture's first heists!)

Did you get a chance to ckeck that out, Mike? What did ya think?

Then you're REALLY going to like FRIENDLY #5... that's all I'll say.

Arthur-- you're absolutely right about the time-line for VULTURE'S appearance in FNSM. And no-- I haven't seen the latest issue of SENSATIONAL-- but I think I'm going to go to the comic shope today-- so I'll look out for it.

Haha, yeah, from the preview it looks like the heist he pulled when he came up from the sewers while the police were expectcing him to attack from the skies!

I'm only 20, but I read that from the 40 years of the Amazing Spider-man CD-Rom, I've onyl read up to #61 so far, lol! I've been reading/collecting since Amazing Spider-man 395...till current and just got the CD-Rom a few months ago, great stuff!

Anywho, I can't wait to see what other suprises are in FNSM #5 and look forward to picking it up!

So, you don't get a complimentary issue of the Spidey books? lol, jk! I was wondering how they brief you, if at all, what is going on in the other spider-books? I guess it wouldn't really mater, you provide the pencils, not the story content, not to say you don't contribute just as much to the story, ;)

I was really considering getting into comics, I may still at some point, so I've got a lot of questions, lol, sorry! Comic books are such an interesting medium.

Let us know what you thought of Sensational if you get a chance!

All the best,

Arthur

Hey Mike,

Glad to see you back on the forums again! I'm glad that now I know that you won't be doing all the books on FNSM, so I can tell my owner only to pull your work for me. You are my real inspiration fro drawing man. Hope to hear from you soon, I tried e-mailing a couple of times but my e-mail wasn't working to great from Jan til mid Feb.

I'm not sure if this is the forum to broach the subject, but since we're discussing FNSM, are you planning on posting any more original pages on Mothcomix any time soon?
Also, I am wrong in seeing Peter, JMS and the other writers among the cops and paramedics standing around Spidey in issue 3?

Mike Wieringo
02-21-2006, 11:35 PM
I'll be sending some more pages to the MOTHCOMIX folks soon.

And yes, you're wrong. I had no intention of portraying anyone's likeness on those pages with the police-- so any resemblence is purely coincidental.
