View Full Version : Punch holes in this theory.
Something occurred to me last night. We've been told by Didio and others that IC is at least partly about what happens when the Trinity breaks up and how damaging that can be to the rest of the DCU. One of the underlying themes in the story is that the Trinity is "flawed" or that they "lost their way."
Well, there's something a little interesting about the Trinity and their roles in the original Crisis. Superman of E2 went off to another dimension after the Crisis. Wonder Woman of E2 went off to Olympus after the Crisis. Batman of E2 was dead at the time of the Crisis.
Is it possible that the current Trinity is "flawed" because they're incomplete? Were they meant to "merge" somehow at the end of Crisis?

Sounds a little like the resolution of the "young Legion/old Legion" situation from ZERO HOUR.

Which is funny because the original plan was to reveal the SW6 (young Legion) was the real deal and that the grown up versions were the fakes.
Does it? My memory of Zero Hour is (thankfully) spotty.

I remember thinking the same thing early on- I posted it somewhere but not as clearly as you did here. Combine this with Didio's "no comment" on whether we'll see EArth-2 WW before this is done, and Kal-L's comment that Bruce's death led to the darkening of Earth 2, makes me believe that this seems more and more likely.
The one whole in the theory I can think of is the repeated statements that Dick Grayson of the current DCU is as good as his Earth-2 counterpart, who died in Crisis so he wouldn't have been merged with our Dick. Though that might explain why Ollie Queen has been such a rat bastard lately...

It's similar in that the young and old Legion merged to form the post-ZH Legion.
However, the idea of the current Trinity being flawed or incomplete because they failed to merge IS novel.
There could be a lot worse fates for Kal-L than merging into the current Superman.
With all the controversy over the Weisinger Krypton, Birthright and Man of Steel, I think it would shut people up if DC basically just said that Siegel and Shuster's stories were Superman's background.
That he was launched from a Krypton where Jor-El wore a green jumpsuit (no sun on the chest or headband or robe or S-shield) and that he grew up in Smallville. That he smashed a green car when he first met Lois and could only leap one eighth of a mile. And that his powers came steadily as he fought gangsters and a few science based guys.
Fans of the various origins all claim that their is closer to the classic version but if DC just slapped down the actual first five years of comics (minus WWII references) as "the canon", I think that would have some authority to it.
That and the only way I'd probably pick up Wonder Woman would be if she took on the Diana Prince identity and dated Steve Trevor and flew an invisible plane. Keep the superior mythology of the Perez run, fine. But Wonder Woman without a secret identity just doesn't interest me that much unless Joss Whedon can change my mind.
I admit, it had occurred to me that Dick Grayson throws this theory a little out of whack, although it's notable that the modern Dick being as good or better a person than the E2 Dick is a plot point.
It's also notable that 2 other unmerged characters: Power Girl and Lois Lane - have suffered. PG has had an unhappy life in the modern DCU and E2 Lois is dying.

It is interesting to note that none of the characters who were retconned out of WWII got merged with their Earth-1 counterparts.
Superman went to the paradise dimension.
Wonder Woman went to Olympus.
Batman died.
Robin died.
Green Arrow died.
Earth-2 Aquaman's post-WWII fate was never told as I understand it but we certainly don't see much evidence of his entirely science-based origin in the post-Crisis universe.
Now, I doubt anybody even remembers the Earth-1 Wesley Dodds Sandman and Sandy the Golden Boy but both characters were WWII heroes (ala Earth-2) post-Crisis anyway.
But it's kindof funny in a way that they eliminated these characters rather than merge them into the surviving versions.
