I have only the most basic understanding of New Gods lore. So with that in mind, is Metron on the side of good or evil? Or does he just follow his own agenda with any alliances being born merely of convenience?

The latter. It's because he's always on the quest for more knowledge; so wherever the ability to gain more knowledge comes from, he'll go there - if that means to Highfather, or to Darkseid.

Most of the time when Metron appears it usually means that the crap is about to hit the fan. If an issue starts off with Metron appearing out of a Boom Tube he's usually the bearer of some horrible news...............like Earth is going to be invaded or the universe is about to be destroyed.

That's right. And not because he is a good person but his life is in peril too.http://www.smileyhut.com/confused/eyebrow.gif (http://www.smileyhut.com)http://www.smileyhut.com/angry/suck_kr.gif (http://www.smileyhut.com)

First off, kudos to reviving a 2 year old thread.
Second.....eh, not so much he was in peril. But Earth had been shown to be such an important part of the universe, where lots of answers to the universe's questions had come from, I'm sure our survival was key to allowing him to get these answers in the future.
And as shown in DEATH OF THE NEW GODS.......his thirst for knowledge became just a morbid fascination, watching his own people die just to see how it could possibly happen; until, finally, "even he had seen enough"...
