My advice is to self-publish and learn the ropes the hard way.
You'll learn so much about the biz in the process.
Think of it as an investment in your future.
Just don't go into it with high, let alone unrealistic, expectations.

You should check out DIGITAL WEBBING, PENCIL JACK and THE DRAWING BOARD for folks who are looking to hook up with a writer. There's lots of hungry young artists out there who are looking to get published. You could team up and pitch your story to a small publisher or publish it yourself.

The thing about self publishing is that unless you can afford to pay the artist, you're going to be at his/her whim as far as how long they take to draw the story... or if they do it at all. I've heard of lots of folks that end up hooking up with flaky or lazy artists. But that's the chance you take when you're not paying.

It's a struggle, man. I can only wish you the best of luck.

and don't just tell us about it, there are plenty of wannabe comic artists in different forums on this board. just post around. you might be lucky to find someone here, cause from what i've seen there are some pretty talented nobody-yets hanging around and posting their work on these boards.
