Rose is perhaps best known for her roles in Troy, Wicker Park, and Star Wars: Attack Of The Clones. Unlike the mostly well-known Bond girl actresses (Hatcher, Yeoh, Richards and Berry) in the Brosnan films, Campbell seems to be going for an unknown, low-key actress.

I don't know if Michelle Yeoh really counts as famous. At least in the US. Yeah, Supercop had come out here, but Tomorrow was really her big breakout role in the US.

What about Crouching Tiger?

What about Crouching Tiger?
Tomorrow Never Dies came out in 1997. Crouching Tiger in 2000. Although now I'm wondering whether that was the Chinese date or the American date, because it was released in China before the US. In any case, TND came out several years before CTHD, and would mark Yeoh's first real American exposure, outside of a dubbed version of Supercop being re-released in the US.
I saw Tomorrow Never Dies strictly because Michelle Yeoh was in it - in fact, it's still the only post-Dalton Bond I've seen; but I think StoneGold is right: in general Western audiences would not have known much about her before TND. I don't believe it was all that great a career decision for her, actually.

It would be foolish for them to cast a well known actress, because her name would simply overshadow Craig's.
Not to mention many more famous and well known actresses (ie. Angelina Jolie, Charlize Theron) have already turned down the part. They really had no choice but to start looking at lesser knowns. Still I am happy Byrne was (or will be chosen-if the tab is right).

I thought Byrne would be a good choice for Wonder Woman.

Daniel Craig and Rose Byrne? Sounds like a classy Bond movie. It's Casino Royale, right? Isn't it the one where he marries the girl?

No you're thinking of On Her Majesties Secret Service. That was already made into a Bond film in the sixties with George Lazenby (one time Bond) and Diana Rigg as his wife Tracy.
I believe that the role in that Byrne has been cast for Vesper Lynd (?) was Bond's fiance. Apparently she double crosses him. I am not sure what happens, if he kills her or she is murdered by someone else. I just know that there is a famous line in it where Bond says "The Bitch is dead", and he is refering to her.

In the book, after the bad guys are beaten, Lynd and Bond go for a romantic holiday in some hotel. Lynd gets more and more depressed, and Bond struggles with the issue of marrying her. When he finally decides to propose, he goes into their room to find her dead. The note she leaves behind is her confession that she double-crossed Bond and killed herself because of the guilt. Feeling betrayed after reading the note, Bond talks to M. When he asks him about Lynd's status, Bond simply replies "The Bitch is Dead".
Yes, the literature Bond is a very cold character. Far more so than the movie Bond.
Thank you for the information Handofate. I had no idea. I am beginning to understand why some Fleming enthusiasts had no time for Brosnan or Moore's performance as Bond. And why they are excited about Daniel Craig, and think that he will be closer to Ian Fleming's original creation.
If you've seen his performance in 'Munich' you will see why. However I am not sure that the makers will go the whole hog in that direction. Considering they are doing 'Bond Begins' and the fact that the general audiences (ie. non-Bond fans) have come to expect a certain style to come from Bond.

Forget Byrne, it's Eva Green now. She played Sibylla in Kingdom of Heaven.
