Apologies if it’s been discussed, as this volume has been out for a while, but I just recently picked this up, and am grooving on it, warts and all (and there are plenty of warts to be found). Regardless of my feelings about Jean’s resurrection, I’m enjoying this memory lane trip!
The funnier bits can be found in Bob Layton’s first 5 or 6 issues, and the 80’s references. Specifically librarian Vera’s New Wave makeover, love of Elvis Costello, and her left wing radical South American record store on Thompson Street! And The Beast complaining about 1,000/month rent for a 6 floor walkup (a bargain nowadays in NYC). Boom Boom’s Madonna-be look. It’s like 200 Cigarettes with mutants!
It’ll be interesting to see how the transition between Layton and Louise Simonson flows. Layton gave Scott & Madelyne’s marital angst some good moments, and he generated a lot of pro-Maddie sympathizers. Simonson seemed to take Jean’s side.
Any thoughts?
