View Full Version : Keeping track of the Astonishing X-Men team

Since Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men book has been on hiatus for a while I thought it would be useful and interesting to track the team despite the fact that they don't have a title at the moment. Aside from the obvious issues of 1-12 we have:

House of M - Emma, Cyclops, Kitty, Colossus, Wolverine and Beast all appeared in some fashion. Some having much bigger roles than others but since it was an Astonishing X-Men/Avengers crossover that was a place that the Astonishing team starred in after the book was put on hiatus.

House of M Decimation: The Day After - Starring Cyclops, Wolverine, Colossus, Emma Frost, Kitty and Beast as well as some of the New X-Men and the Milligan X-Men team. The team is mostly at the mansion recovering from HoM.

X-Men (Decimation) - Sentinels land onto the mansion property with Wolverine, Colossus, Cyclops and Beast on the grounds. We first meet Sentinel Squad O*N*E and Cyclops reluctantly lets the Sentinels remain at the mansion for "protection" (not like he was given a choice anyway).

X-Men: Deadly Genesis - Sentinels are already established and in the backround and Cyclops, Wolverine, Emma Frost, Kitty and Colossus are all present in the book. Cyclops, Wolverine and Rachel investigate crash landed shuttle.

I'm guessing that Deadly Genesis will be the last book to have the core and main Astonishing cast until the title continues again with Joss's second year. Looks to be a fun ride and even though the team didn't have a book for a while Marvel did an admirable job of keeping them in the mix. What do you guys think about the whole thing and what other books have they been in that give them a relevant enough role to continue their story?

They were in New Avengers for The Sentry's arc.

And of course Wolvie's off in Japan, removing limbs, in his own title just now...

Now that he's got his memory back.

Uncanny X-men - Mojo Arc: Nearly all of them appeared in some way or form in the 2 issue arc, mainly in the first issue. Beast playing a big role in it.

With Astonishing being Bi-monthly now, I hope that they will have more appearances in the other titles. It's been good seeing them spread through the main decimation titles while Astonishing has been absent.

12 appearances in 2 years is pretty pathetic. I think Cyclops and Kitty deserve more exposure (and some decent development, which Whedon generally seems unable to do)

And I can see big continuity issues coming up due to it.

You know what, it better not have 6 issue arcs like last time. else it might be worse.

Oh and to add to the who debate, Cyclops and Emma have appeared in most X-men books for a while now. Ditto with Kitty. Becuase they are dominant in the X-men yet no in their main book, Writer are doing well to incoroprate them into others and they are doing it well.

I'm pretty sure it will probably be another 2 six issue arcs.

Now that I think about it , your right, Kitty has made quite a few appearances recently (Uncanny, New Excalibur).

Colossus has still done NOTHING!!

Beast and Wolverine are fine as they are now that Wolverine is Astonishing only.

I just wanna see Cyclops do something really freaking cool. Whedon has made him quite dull, when he is (was?) actually a very interesting character.

Do we know if Whedon is going to continue with the Hellfire Club (See last issue of Astonishing).

The hint was that Emma has been working for the Hellfire Club all along, and Shaw spoke about what a pity it was going to be to break her and Scott up...

If that's going to be explored I should think Cyke would get quite a bit of exposure...

The lad started showing some spine in that issue, scolding Emma. Too bad at the same time Charley had to be passed for a creep.

Colossus has still done NOTHING!!
Which is why I still ask myself what was the big reason for bring him back?

Don't get me wrong, I am a big Colossus fan and was mad at Marvel for killing him off but Uncanny X-men 390 is still my favorite single issue of all-time. The way Colossus didn't even think twice about killing himself to save millions of lives and the last page that had his quotes about joing the X-men were priceless. And then seeing Kitty's recreation and thoughts about it all in X-men 110 made that issue my second favorite single issues of all-time in the X-men's history. Colossus to me had the best death then any other X-men and was right up there with any Marvel character.

Now that Marvel has bought him back not only have they ruined his great sacrafice for mutantkind but he was bought back because.....why? In already 8 issues of Astonishing he does nothing and has barely even been in the book. He showed up in Uncanny for 2 issues and has yet to be in adj. Xmen and he had a mini that also from what I have heard he barely did anything in that too. Whatever happen to Quesada's rule about "Dead characters can only come back if the story that has them coming back is very great", does this rule happen to apply to any of Marvel's characters out there or am I missing something here?

He got a mini.

It wasn't great.

Doesn't Joss Whedon have some kind of agreement relating to only using him in astonishing? Seem to recall hearing that.

I personally think Colossus' death was one of the worst issues I've ever read. It was a supposed 'shock' death, to generate interest, but it totally failed for me.

His conversation with Nick Fury was pretty well played and spot on. As far as cool stuff goes his optic blast on the broken down Sentinel at the mansion was a neat moment among others. I dunno, I think Whedon made him feel more down to earth and human as well as a good leader. Brubaker is continuing that pretty well with Deadly Genesis.

Forgot the Astonishing team were in the 198, small role but there.

Tis funny how they appear more in other books than they do in their own :p
