I don't want to take that with a truckload of salt, I want to take that with a little note that says "I'm 100% true."
Johnny Depp makes everything good.
And Justin Theroux as Harvey Dent wouldn't hurt either, he already knows Christian Bale.

would crispin glover circa when back to the future was made been a good joker?
SlightlyMad

I think Crispin Glover could still make a good Joker (he was suitably manic in the Charlie's Angels movies). Other contender's could include:
Adrien Brody
Jason Lee
Paul Bettany
Christian Slater
But Depp hasn't put in a bad performance yet & I'd love to see him play a villain.

Depp's a fantastic actor.. and if indeed he's the one they get to play the Joker, then by golly it's going to be sweet.. If anyone can combine manic insanity with disturbing comedic genius, it's Johnny Depp.

I like Johnny Depp, and I think he will make a good Joker, but I say that John C. McGinley from Scrubs would be the perfect Joker. Hell, he plays him every week on Scrubs. And I say go with somone more, uhm, exotic, than Rachel Weiszz as Talia. I mean, Rachel Weiszz is a great actress and damn hot, but, she doesn't look like Talia.

Their scooper gives blind item rumours for two characters, interestingly enough one of them is entirely new in terms of being on film - "This is the first screen appearance for this character in the Batman films and she has a very close connection with a major character in Nolan's first Batman movie. She will be out for revenge against Bruce Wayne and Gotham in a major way. As of who the studio is looking at for this role, let's just say that she is nominated for a SAG, a Golden Globe and is on her way to an Oscar nomination as well. She is also in fact five months pregnant and will be in tip top fighting shape once production begins to roll early next year but not before she throws a few coins in a fountain".
Who wants to bet there talking about Talia? Hmmm, does anyone know who there hinting as playing her?

They should basically have their pick of actors to play the Joker. It seems like *everyone* in Hollywood wants to play the Joker, even actors who normally wouldn't be caught dead in a comic film otherwise.
There was a false rumor going around that Michael Keaton would be the Joker in a cruel ironic twist for Bat-fans everywhere.
To be honest, I wouldn't mind that rumor being true.

"Who should we get? .. I know! Johnny Depp."
I prefer someone like Christian Bale. Someone with a much lower profile. And I'm pretty sure that's the direction they'll go in. They obviously made enough money with the first one that they feel confident enough with their choices.

Seems to me the best woman character to have in a Joker-related Batman movie is Harley Quinn rather than Talia. I like Talia, but I'd rather see Harley.
As far as Depp goes, I'm sure he'd do fine. However when I saw Wedding Crashers I thought Bradley Cooper looked alot like the Joker. He really took his smile to a psychotic level in that movie. I can't find a picture to do it justice, but if you saw the movie, it was really like a Joker grin. He was also on Alias, and in Changing Lanes.

I also like Sam Rockwell.I can see Jason Lee as the Joker. All he'd have to do is mix equal parts Azrael from "Dogma" and Syndrome from "The Incredibles".
The problem with casting Depp as the Joker is that he would end up overshadowing everyone else, even Christian Bale's Batman. He's good, but he'd overpower the mix. Besides, he'd probably end up looking like a more evil version of Captain Jack Sparrow.

Jason Lee was my casting pick (Holy Bartender), but I can't say no to Depp.
Johnny Depp can upstage everyone in any film, he stole "Once Upon A Time In Mexico" from Antonio Banderas, but the Joker is very theatrical and bright, Batman is in the shadows, it doesn't matter who plays the Joker, he will always upstage Batman.
And he's basically wearing the Joker's costume here

I have to agree with the majority, though, I think --
The only problem with Depp as the Joker is that he'd be *too* good. He would completely steal the show away from Bale's Batman (which just shouldn't happen ever, because Bale just *nailed* Batman so perfectly).

That's weird, but I do see your point.
On the one hand, I think that Johnny Depp is a great actor, a cool guy, and he has done a great job of picking movies, but I don't think that he's manic enough to play the Joker. Maybe. I didn't that Willie Wonka movie, but Depp's comic turn as Cap'n Jack Sparrow might be close to what he would do as the Joker.
On the other hand, I'm not much of a fan of Michael Keaton. I thought that he was an awful choice to play Batman, and he has worked on too many lame movies. But he has a certain manic energy, a crazed gleam in his eyes that make me think he would be a very good Joker.

Yikes! ...Oh yeah, we're talking perfect match here..
As for upstaging Batman.. ...Joker has always upstaged Batman in all media adaptations.. Cesar Romero upstaged Adam West, Jack Nicholson upstaged Michael Keaton, Mark Hamill upstaged Kevin Conroy...
It all depends on whether or not the upstager is haming it up (like Nicholson did) or really earning the spotlight (like Hamill did). And I think Depp can earn that spotlight. Mark Hamill's Joker is greatly remembered because Mark managed to make the character amusing and entertaining, as well as darkly disturbing.
I mean, if you're going to have a Joker on the big screen, you need to get a guy who can deliver lines like this:
The Joker: Jumpin' Jiminy Christmas. Charlie Collins! It's been forever. How are you man? You look great... lost a little weight. Lost a little hair too.
The Joker: Okay, Chaz, when Harley knocks on the door three times, you open it.
Charlie: And?
The Joker: That's it.
Charlie: Wait. That's the favor? You called me here just to open a door?
The Joker: Well look at the size of that cake, man! She can't open the door and push it in all at once! THINK!!!
Charlie: (to himself) He is nuts!
The Joker: "I'm the Joker...living proof that you don't have to be crazy to host this show, but it helps."
The Joker: You're right, Harl. Fish are disgusting. Maybe I'll try my toxin out on cattle instead. Joker Burgers! Talk about a Happy Meal.
Now.. tell me honestly you don't think Johnny Depp can't deliver lines like that as well as Mark Hamill can. ...With a straight face.

I don't think an understated Joker would be all that interesting.I agree that the Joker should be front and center, craving the limelight and essentially being the living embodiment of chaos, but not to the point where you forget Batman is even there! It's about balance, which is the one problem I had with the Burton/Schumacher Batman villains. The villains always outshone the Bat. Seriously, you know you're in trouble when you're losing viewers to Mr. Freeze!

Once you get into the deeper end of the rogues gallery though, they're almost always going to be more attention getters than Batman. Given that he's all stoic, and they're all wacky. It's why Yul Brenner kept getting pissed off at Steve McQueen in Magnificent Seven.

Paul Giamati is too short to play the Joker, but he might be good as the Mad Hatter. Depp would be a better Harvey Two-Face, or the Riddler. Why not get John Glover, the guy that plays Lionel Luthor, to play the Joker.

I think that Bale is just as good actor as Depp is and able to stand on his own. Ultimately I hope they cast someone who has enough chemistry with Bale we'd be interested in the both of them. But I'm exicted by the notion (even though I don't by the rumour) that the Depp and Bale would share the screen. I think the two could play off each other pretty wel since they both make interesting choices.
The Burton/Schumacher movies sufered mainly from their scripts which gave more time and more interesting stories to the villans. The last movie was more interested in Batman/Bruce Wayne (to a fault I'd argue).
I'd also like to remind everyone this is just a rumour. No one even knows when they will shoot the next Batman movie.

It's only a rumor, but I like it.
I think Depp would be better for this role than Crispin Glover (Depp has more presence and acting ability) and definitely better than some of the nuttier choices, like Michael Keaton and Jason Lee. Depp is either one of Hollywoods biggest eccentrics, or else he fakes it very convincingly. For the Joker, you want to get somebody who personifies controlled chaos, a dark sense of humor, and a completely unorthodox style of delivery. Take a look at any Depp film... Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Ed Wood, even family films like Pirates of the Carribbean display his knack for being completely askew. He's the best choice I've heard so far, although I still like my original pick, which was Jude Law.
To be honest, I like Depp more than Nicholson for this character. Nicholson was a great casting decision and an even better actor, but I don't know that he was strange enough to make the character complete. Jack was good at giving the Joker that whole "sneering gangster with a weird sense of humor" thing, but he wasn't as subtle and perverse and Depp is.

Sadly, in execution, she more often than not just manically switches between "I love you my darling!" and "I must obey my father's wishes." and goes and stands behind daddy's chair.
I will grant that this is an older characterization (or "non-" as it were). They seem to have done more with her the last 2 or 3 years than they have in the previous 20.
