View Full Version : What's So Great About Daniel Way?

Lately Daniel Way has been writing every other book in Marvel. Punisher vs Bullseye, Supreme Power: Nighthawk, Wolverine, Hulk, What If starring Wolverine, had a story in Amazing Fanstasy #15 and hes been annouce to be the writer for Wolverine: Origins. Who did this guy impress to get so many writing assignments? I read some of his stuff like his Sabretooth mini, Venom (at the shop) and his story in Amazing Fantasy and I found them to be terrible. I also find his Hulk and Wolverine quite boring. I know there are a few people here that enjoy is work and I just want to know why. I need to know every good thing about him if I want to enjoy the new Wolverine ongoing.
I like that he's succinct. He doesn't overload the panels with narrative.
I also think he has a sense of humor. Take a look at how he writes Bullseye - halfway between psycho and stand0-up comic. Good stuff. I'll give him a long look on Wolverine Origins.

He's no worse than half of marvel's current crop of lackluster writers.

I like his Nighthawk work.

He's not a great writer, but he's a good solid writer that doesn't let his person style overshadow the characters.

Every time I see him doing a book with Steve Dillon I have to remind myself that he's not Garth Ennis.

his nighthawk and hulk are really good right now. and his wolverine is decent. some people are calling him the next ennis. i'd say he's already better than ennis has ever been.

Well i'm digging him so far . I couldnt even remember he was involved in all those titles , because imo he is most of the time writing those the chracters own voice , rather than his beliefs and style (if that was even possible) .
Of course as a result i dont think we should expect anything original and groundbreaking from him .

He's okay, IMO. He's improving quite a bit over his earlier work.

Just wanted to add that he has the potential to be.

He's really good with build-up and certain details that might have been minor earlier become more important towards the overall plot. I also think that he gets the characters (both Hulk and Wolverine) is ambitious and has a good deal of foresight which is a good thing.
Not GREAT yet but I'm really liking his work as of the moment.

Nighthawk has been enjoyable but i think its more to the fact that i had low expectations of the series when i heard Way was writing. He wrote a tangled web story with Tombstone which was entertaining but his venom and sabretooth were dreadful and nothing else he has written has been that outstanding.

I started reading Wolverine with the first part of Origins And Endings, it shows promise but honestly I don't see anything grand about his work. It's not terrible by any means, but the story just isn't terribly interesting.

You want to get blown away by Way? Read Bullseye's Greatest Hits.

I liked Way a lot until the last issue of Wolverine. I mean, eating himself to heal?!?!?! WTF?!?!? My question was, ok, so now that your bicep & forearm are gone, what do you eat to regenerate them? Your thigh? And to regenerate that?
But that was just 1 instance that he let me down out of many, many, so, yeah, he still rocks!

I guess it depends on the style of writing you like...I don't enjoy his writing at all...he bored me with the Hulk so I dropped it. I've try his Wolverine and it did nothing for me...I have flicked through his Punisher VS Bullseye and NightHawk and they did look good but im waiting for the trades. So right now im not a fan of Daniel Way but maybe I will be soon he jsut hasn't impressed me yet.

I really like him. His Nighthawk is excellent. I assumed that the Hyperion title was going to be the better of the two, but Nighthawk blows Hyperion out of the water. His Punisher/Bullseye is also excellent...and I don't normally like either character. I picked it up because of Way. I am enjoying his Wolverine so far, and I actually liked his Sabretooth mini. Everything I have read by him has been enjoyable. I really like the fact that he has a good grasp of the character personalities instead of making everyone talk like he does like certain big name writers out there. He is not top tier yet, but he has the potential to be and I am optimistic that he will be someday.

I'm loving his Hulk work and I think Wolverine will pick up pace when he can do something again (Origins) until then he has to pad it out... alot.
He's nothing breathtaking but I've enjoyed some of his stuff and hopefully the two big storylines he has will pay off.

Its not horrible or anything, but I have never smiled or gotten any sense of enjoyment out of any of his books. The bullseye one was almost good enough to buy, but I still passed. I don't understand why he's so prevalent now in the MU though.
I am a pretty dedicated wolverine fan, and I have the first 31 or 32 issues of the current run. However, my complete run has now been interrupted by this guy and his unispired take on the character. This is a huge story for wolverine fans too, so I don't understand why this guy gets to do it. Just cuz he knows who silver fox is, doesn't make him qualified to write this story. It just doesn't feel like Wolverine's solo book anymore. It took me like two minutes to read the current issue in the store, and I thought it was pretty crappy. I'm not one of those complaining comic fans but being that this is the most important wolverine story maybe ever, I think they should have put more effort into it.
So in closing, Way needs to turn up the grit, add some more dialogue, hire a new artist, and speed things up if he wants to alleviate my frustrations.
p.s. - his hulk run is craptastic too. The first issue of this run could have been told in two pages, and this whole story should have been a one parter. Daniel way is killing me slowly with boredom!

Wasn't he behind the Ant-Man project for MAX that never materialized? I remember looking forward to that one.

If he was doing a max antman then he gets some respect for that. I was looking forward to that too but I forgot all about it when it never showed up. What the dilly yo?

Marvel never said. I just assumed it was part of the general cutback on the MAX line. Avi Arad reportedly doesn't like it, thanks to Ennis's FURY basically scuttling a Nick Fury movie.

Daniel Way touched a blind man and healed him.
Daniel Way was born at the exact center of the universe.
Daniel Way co-wrote the Emancipation Proclamation.

THAT is why Daniel Way is so great. :)

Daniel Way wrote a story where he had Steve Dillon draw a man vomiting in a full face mask. That is why he is great.
Oh, that and Bullseye's Greatest Hits, where he tells this great origin story, then reveals all of it might have been BS just so Bullseye could kill his dad.
