I am a little confused. I am unfamiliar with Squadron Supreme, but I know that the current Supreme Powers deals with 2 former members...Nighthawk (Marvel's Batman) and Hyperion (Marvel's Superman). I also know that Squadron Supreme has had dealings in the past with the Avengers back in the 80s-90s I think. So they have a solid history behind them. But what confuses me is when I look at almost any website for information...it doesn't add up to what's out there now. The current Nighthawk is black and his name is Kyle. Well....the only Nighthawk I can find online is some white dude with a rediculous costume and has the exact same name. Hyperion's back story seems different as well. Could somebody please shed some light on the subject..because I'm interested in picking up these new books but if they are more of a "ultimate", so to speak, Squadron Supreme I would rather pass.

Pass, then.

SUPREME POWER is a start-over-from-scratch revamp. The character names and source materials are the same, but pretty much everything else has been changed.

I'd say give it a try. I'm not really familiar with the original SS but in my mind Supreme Power has been possibly the best overall book Marvel has put out over the last couple years. It seems to have lost a bit of focus lately, probably due to Marvel jerking it around between Max and non Max status, and rebooting it again. But its still pretty good and wonder of wonders it has good art and good writing TOGETHER in the SAME BOOK. A rarity in Marvel nowadays.

I agree...Supreme Power is a cut above almost everything else Marvel is putting on paper these days. Just superbly written and well drawn, with some complex characters and motivations. I love all the characters except for Power Princess (whose mystical obscurity annoys me), and the moral ambiguity of the entire situation is handled even better than the Ultimates.

Great read.

I think I will pass on it then. I may be giving up some decent books...but I don't wanna get into it the same reason I don't get into Ultimate. Too many story lines going at once and trying to keep up with all the continuity is daunting sometimes. I am going to keep it as self contained as I can. Thanks for the info guys.

Don't compare this book to ultimate crap, try it out... It's easily one of the best books from Marvel.

why not? it's very comprable to the ultimate approach to characters.
and to chime in with others, it's been marvel's best book since it came out about 2 and a half years ago.
and really i don't get the gripe about not wanting to follow another continuity. let's say hypothetically it was the original ss. you'd then be following it's continuity in addition to the continuity of all the other books you're reading. the way it is now, instead of following that continuity, you'd be following this continuity. one continuity or another, no big difference. then you say "well i know the continuity of the other ss, not this one". well, then in order to get caught up to date on that version of the ss's continuity you'd still either have to jump in blind with the next issue of that ss's series, or pick up the back issues of that ss's series. and you'd be doing the same here.

Tell us what kind of comics you enjoy. That makes a big difference as to whether you would enjoy Supreme Power or Squadron Supreme.

Squadron Supreme and The Ultimates are very similar conceptually.

They're both "realistic" takes on/deconstructions of iconic super groups. Squadron Supreme is the JLA, and the Ultimates are the Avengers.

Both books explore the consequences of government intervention in metahuman activities.

Both books are very politically grounded, and feature morally ambiguous characters with questionable motives. Totalitarianism is a strong theme in both titles.

Both titles are excellent reads, by the way. :)

The main difference between the two is that the Ultimates are already a team, while Supreme Power is yet to assemble anything resembling the team on which it's based. And the Ultimates aren't at odds with the government as much as the Supreme Power characters are.

As others have said, Supreme Power is one of the best books Marvel has put out for a long time. Frank's art is wonderful and JMS is at his best every issue.

BUY THIS BOOK!

What's the status of the book though? I got it up to issue 17 or so but then it vanished and all these minis started to appear.

Any help would be appreciated b/c it is a great read.

It's changing imprints and starting over with a new title and a new #1.

#18 was the last issue of the MAX series. HYPERION and NIGHTHAWK are six issue mini-series filling the gap between that issue and the first issue of the new series, under the Marvel Knights imprint.
