Why waste brain power getting mad at Fred Phelps? He's a clown. He's old. Soon he'll be clowning in hell. (Metaphorically of course, I'm an athiest.) Good.

That's all the regard from me he deserves or will get.

The fact that he's not alone is a reason to be worried. Admittedly that link was pretty bad.

Being a Christian, I feel like apologizing for Phelps... until I remembered that most people know that Phelps doesn't speak for Christians. They know the media goes after the crazy people who needs medication in any given group.

That's what Phelps is. He's one of the crazy people who needs medication of Christians. Maybe chemical castration too.

Lets just hope he gets the Reverend Jim Bakker "Heavenly kick to the nuts" treatment.

For the record: Fred Phelps is a liar and blasphemer against God.

In this flyer, he quotes a couple of Bible passages (Psalm 2:4 and Proverbs 1:26-27) as "proof" that God will laugh and mock people as they die. Let's look, shall we?

"He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh; the Lord shall have them in
derision." Psalm 2:4

Ooh, hey look, context! It seems the Lord is speaking to the nations and kings of the earth, and he's talking about the day when the Anointed One will come. There is no way that this passage suggests that God rejoices and celebrates the deaths of ordinary working people; it's talking about the arrogance and self-importance of kings who declare themselves to be equal to God.

"I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh; When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you." Prov. 1:26-27

One little problem. It's not God speaking in that passage. Turn back a bit to Proverbs 1:20-21 and see for yourself: Wisdom calls aloud in the street, she raises her voice in the public squares; at the head of the noisy streeets she cries out, in the gateways of the city she makes her speech:

Then he moves on to Deuteronomy 28:20:

"The Lord shall send upon thee cursing, vexation, and rebuke, in all that thou settest thine hand unto for to do, until thou be destroyed, and until thou perish quickly; because of the wickedness of thy doings, whereby thou hast
forsaken me." Deut. 28:20

Last time I checked, West Virginia is not ancient Israel. Which is to say, West Virginia is not a theocracy directly ruled by God. Israel was, and the rules laid out here (along with the accompanying punishments for disobedience) apply only to them, not to the rest of the world. Also, this passage falls in the middle of a chapter that begins with promises of blessing for obedience and concludes with a renewal of God's covenant with Moses. Citing it in the context of this mine disaster is just looking for ways to hurt people.

Phelps also mentions 2nd Chronicles 36:16:
They mocked our message, despised our words, and misused our people, until the wrath of the Lord arose against West Virginia "till there was no remedy." 2 Chron. 36:16

Once again, let's look, shall we?

The Lord, the God of their fathers, sent word to them through his messengers again and again, because he had pity on his people and on his dwelling place. But they mocked God's messengers, despised his words and scoffed at his prophets until the wrath of the Lord was aroused against his people and there was no remedy. He brought up against them the king of the Babylonians, who killed their young men with the sword in the sanctuary, and spared neither young man nor young woman, old man or aged. God handed all of them over to Nebuchadnezzar. 2 Chronicles 15-17

Huh. It seems that when God's people turn away from him, his judgment comes in the form of oppression by tyrannical government, not mine cave-ins. One might argue that the current administration is a sign of God's disfavor, not the deaths of these poor men.

If I were anywhere near West Virginia, I would be at that funeral. Nothing would make me more proud to be a Christian than to see people standing up to those people as they did at Matthew Shepard's funeral, singing "Amazing Grace" in their hateful faces.

Once more with feeling: Fred Phelps is a liar and blashemer and the truth is not in him. I have no doubt that the Lord will say to him "depart from me; I never knew you."

The only punishment he's gonna get is what people hand out here on earth. If he pickets the funerals of the miners grieving families I hope someone kicks his ass. I'm surprised that the legal system can't punish him for spreading hate the way he does. People shoudn't wait for "god" to deal with this guy.

I think that's one of the ways they make money. they're very litigious.

One of his daughters is a lawyer, and they all know the legal system well. theyre a scary lot.

the scariest part is that they believe they are doing good in the name of God. They actually point to places in the bible where it says the word "hate"(King James version) and justify themselves.

I totally agree with you, but they twist it to what they want to believe. I know of nothing good that that family/compound(Phelps) does, for their community, or in general.

I do know that most if not all other churches(and people who live there in general) in the area look down on him, and see him as a disgrace.

I think he hates telemarketers. He was ok with the prayers day in and day out, even during his dinner time or when he was watching "48 Hours".
But when he started getting:

Dear Lord,

Are you happy with your long distance carrier?
If I may ask, how long have you had the service and does your service offer internet, unlimited long distance on weekends and 24 service?
If you will just give me a moment, I will explain to you some of the benefits of our Newcomer's Package....
