Hey guys im going to New York in mid March and I was hoping you all could give me some ideas for whats cool to do (mostly from a geek perspective) like cool stores, places to eat, not so popular but bizarre stuff....whatever. Any ideas since I've never been there would be awesome.

Cosmic comics on 23rd between Park Avenue and Madison
Midtown Comics on 40th and 7th Avenue( I think) but you can't miss it
Not much on restaurants, but if you like to know those quick stop food restaurants like
Taco Express on 23rd and 24th Street on 7th Avenue
good eats rigth there hmmmmm! TACOOO!
Can't really say anymore i gotta sign off !!! i tell you some more on Tuesday!!

Elhuevosupremo,
NY bagels even beat Miami bagels (it’s the water).
Grab some at Zabar’s with a schmeer.
Harley Café-biker burgers surrounded by Harley stuff, Midtown.
Go to the Village & Soho & just walk around-check out the galleries.
ChinaTown-the best food this side of San Francisco.
Ditto Little Italy-stop into Umberto’s where Crazy Joe Gallo got shot.
Sushi-Taka Sushi in Midtown
You haven’t been to NY until you’ve seen a Broadway play.
TKTS is a discount kiosk on Broadway, somewhere between 42nd & 45th
(I forget) where you can buy unsold tickets for same day performances
at geek prices.
While you’re on Broadway-movies, movies, movies-they’ve got
films that haven’t even opened yet!
Go ice skating in Rockefeller Center.
Get a dog and a pretzel with mustard from a Sabrett’s stand.
And please, take a minute to visit Ground Zero.

I've only been to NYC once, for about 8 hours. I liked St. Mark's Comics a great deal. I liked going to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty (history-geeky). I enjoyed photographing the NY skyline from the Jersey side (when the towers were still there :( ). I went nuts when I drove by the actual Fountains of Wayne (the fountain store, not the band who's also good). I had a great slice of pizza somewhere (don't recall the name...somewhere famous). And I would totally try to see a taping of Letterman, Conan, or SNL. That would be a dream.

For the couple times i've been down there, I suggest Mid-Town comics, as ming said. Bryant park is not to far away from there, it's a nice hang out. Check out the little Pizza joints...great eats.
The MET is nice, -Metropolitan Museum of Art-
If you can find MoCCA, the museum of comic and cartoon art take a look.(forgot the address)
run wild, you find the best stuff like that.

Also...is there anything interesting to see as far as the Marvel and DC buildings? And is the FAO SCHARWTZ store worth visiting?

I have a copy of the following book that I can send you if you would like. Send me an e-mail with your address and I'll get it out to you.
Gerry Frank's Where to Find It, Buy It, Eat It in New York (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/187933318X/qid=1136253930/sr=1-6/ref=sr_1_6/002-7522678-3728823?s=books&v=glance&n=283155)

That's funny! If you want great NYC pizza John's Pizza in the village is one of the best. As far as the TKTS booth goes...you better off going down to the booth at the Seaport...the line is much shorter...you can look them up by putting TKTS in a search, they have a website with directions. As far as going to Marvel or DC...don't bother...unless you are going to see someone specifically, you'll never get in. Ellis Island is great if you are looking for history, the Met is the best for art and MOMA is pretty impressive but a little pricey to get in. Ground Zero is worth a look for the mass hole in the ground but wrap up...it's cold down there! FAO is okay but I'd go down to Soho to Kid Robot...small but interesting...there is never an end of things to do...buy yourself Timeout mag when you get to town and you should be set! Hope this helped and have a good time! I miss the city but not the weather!

Oh yeah, Ellis Island is really cool.
The MoMA is free on Friday nights 4-8pm (but you still need a ticket and there will undoubtedly be a line so get there early). Admission at the Met is "suggested" so if you're really broke you can just walk in.
And buy yourself a danish and grab an orange cat and have breakfast at Tiffany's. ;)
EDIT: while looking to see if my info on admissions is still current I found this website: http://www.cheapotravel.com/ny/ Might be useful!

marvel building on 28th(i think) and park ave-you can see those card board stand ups and some bookstands from the street-if you re daring like i am take the freight elvator up to the ninth floor and roam till you get kicked out....you can can get away by saying you delivering a package but was sent up to the wrong floor
the dc building-is on 53 and broadway- is tuff to crack but if you walk in the front like you own the place you can sneek in-i've made it once to the elevator but was asked where i was going and sent to the messenger center-you can also catch the dc editors taking a smoking brake outside -that is if you know what they look like...
i'd skip FAO it nothing but those learning toys and stuffed animals nowadays......
That's funny! If you want great NYC pizza John's Pizza in the village
mmmmmmmmm john's pizza

rick's time machine-i think the guy changed the name but it still on 14th between 7th and 8th ave-closer to 7th with a can t miss green door-great back issue place-tons of trade paper backs!
toy tokyo-right around st.marks place i forget the street but if you do go to st mark's comics go down to the end of the block make a right and head toward the next corner they re around the middle of the end of the block-please excuse my direction skills :o great place for imported japanese toys :D
